He says that nothing will ever happen to me again, but if something is wrong with our baby—if we lose our baby—I don’t know how I would recover from it.

I’ve already lost enough.

Sergey’s phone starts ringing as he peels himself out of the bed. He kisses me quickly before sliding his thumb across the screen and walking into the hallway.

When he doesn’t come back, I begin to wonder how much of what he’s told me is a lie.

Chapter 18 - Sergey

I should have listened to Leon.

I grip the steering wheel tighter and press down on the gas pedal as I weave my way through the traffic and straight into the maw of hell.

When I get my hands on Ryan he is going to beg for his life.

I thought Leon was exaggerating when he said Ryan would be a problem. I was stupid enough to think he wouldn't dare come after my family after I killed Cole.

In part, I was right.

Ryan, however, was patient. He did not pursue my men but sent his soldiers to come for me. He waited until I had my wife and unborn child with me.

He tried to kill the most important people in my life when he tried to kill me. He knew the loss would be devastating, and still, he tried.

I could have lost Anna.

I could have lost our baby.

For that, he is going to die.

Tires screech against the pavement as I glance at the location displayed on the screen on my dash. It took Denis a few hours to track down Ryan’s location via his phone, and we finally got the address.

Ryan is still supposed to be in the warehouse in front of us. Several of my men are already waiting outside, hidden behind the other buildings, waiting for my signal to enter.

I park behind an abandoned apartment building and jump out of the car to find Denis and Leon already waiting for me.

Leon pulls a gun from his waistband and hands it to me. “How is my new sister doing?”

“She’s still in shock, but she’s going to be okay. Still waiting on the news about whether the baby is going to make it through or not.” I check the gun over before stuffing it into the shoulder holster I tugged on when I left the hospital.

“Who is watching her right now?” Denis asks as he peers through binoculars at the building Ryan is supposed to be in.

“Henrik has stayed behind. He's outside her room and will take out anyone who tries to approach her.” I look back and forth between the two of them. “You don't have to worry about her.”

Leon shrugs a shoulder. “I do worry about her. You are not exactly the easiest person to get along with and she is still new to the family. She doesn’t know our customs yet and I’m sure she is still scared, even though she’s made it her mission to be friends with everyone she meets.”

A small smile tugs at the corner of my mouth before it drops. “Is that bastard still in there?”

Denis nods. “He is by the door. He has his men surrounding it.”

My phone beeps as a notification comes through. “That’s not him. He’s on the move. Get in your cars and follow me. This bastard is going to die today, one way or another.”

The color drains from Denis’ face as he gets back in his car.

I lean down into his open window. “If he gets away, this is on your head.”

I don’t care who Denis is to me. If he's the reason the bastard who almost killed my wife gets away, I'll do to him what I saved for Ryan.

Denis flinches but nods and lets the engine roar to life while Leon signals the rest of my men to drive off. I get into my vehicle and rev up the engine.
