Later, lovies

* * *

My shoulders released at the sight of Willow as she ran in circles at the top of the long driveway.

Home, finally. Away from the noise of the city and Las Vegas.

I was ready to retreat.

And Faith was ready to get back to work, her gallery show only days away.

She locked me out of the atrium the second she stepped inside the house, telling me not to disturb her unless I brought coffee or food.

She’d just closed the door in my face.

I finally had a chance to look at my phone only to find another fucking blind item. They seemed to be ramping up in a way that set me on high alert. Being in security, I was more comfortable in the background, the guy behind the security app, not the guy front and center. And frankly, I didn’t appreciate their insinuation that Faith would be with anyone for money or that they were trying to stir up shit between me and Dominic. I made a mental note to call my friend to make sure he wasn’t pissed about the report.

Before I could call Dominic, my cell rang.

“Hello?” I answered without looking at the screen.

“Seb, it’s Harrison.” The crisp British accent gave it away.

I slipped into my office and turned on my computer. “Harrison, it’s good to hear from you. I apologize again for cutting our visit short.”

“That’s what I wanted to talk to you about.”

I braced myself, setting my phone down on the desk and pressing the speaker button.

“Sophie showed me what’s going around about you.”

I rubbed a hand through my two-days-old scruff. “I saw it and I can tell you I have it handled.”

“You better. I don’t like what I’m seeing in the press, and I hope this won’t distract you from putting together a proposal to update my security system for my UK operations. Think of it as a test run.” The man was all business, the joyous raucous from the other night noticeably absent.

I shot a hand toward the ceiling in celebration. “I have a broad proposal I can send over within the next five minutes and then I will have a specific proposal in your inbox first thing in the morning.”

“I look forward to reading it. And remember what I said about fixing this bad press. Got it?”

“Of course, sir.”

“It seems that my wife is smitten with your Faith. We’ll see you in a few days.”

The man hung up before I could say anything else. I burst from my seat, the adrenaline pumping now that I had Harrison on the line. Now I just needed to reel him in. Hook, line, and sinker.

I put my headphones on and hunkered down, occasionally checking on Faith to make sure she had what she needed.

When my security system beeped, I immediately pulled up my Steele Security app to find someone coming up my drive.

I’d recognize the vehicle anywhere. “Mom?”

I hadn’t even realized she’d gone out. The clock confirmed it was late—very late. After midnight, late.

“Come on, Willow,” I called as I headed toward the door in the kitchen. It was the one closest to where my mom parked her car.

Sure enough, she’d just exited the vehicle when the door shut behind me, the automatic flood lights turning on above my head.

My mom startled at the sound, sighing in obvious relief when she realized it was me. “Seb, you scared the crap out of me.”
