Willow ran up to her and planted several kisses on Mom’s hand, the one not over her heart.

I crossed my arms. “You’re the one coming home after midnight and I’m the one scaring you?”

Mom brushed by me to get inside my house. “You’ve been too wrapped up in Faith to notice.”

“Notice what?”

Mom released a girlish laugh, a huge smile on her face.

“Oh, fuck.” I followed behind her, plunking down in the closest chair, since I wasn’t sure my legs could keep me upright. “You’re seeing someone.”

My mom flitted around the kitchen, taking out some cheese and crackers and some grapes. A veritable late-night snack platter.

She took a huge bite of cracker piled high with cheddar cheese.

“Who is he?” I could run a search on him within minutes of getting his full name. An address would make it easier, but I wasn’t an amateur sleuth. No, I was an expert in cybernetics and could track down the man’s life story within the hour.

I just needed a name.

My mom covered her mouth, intentionally chewing every single morsel with absolute care. As if that would delay the inevitable.

Perhaps I should have gotten that tracker for her vehicle like I wanted to last year. Just as an extra precaution in case it got stolen. While my mom continued to stall, I picked up my phone and placed an order for the aforementioned tracking system.

With that out of the way, I reopened my security app and found the direction from which my mom turned into the main driveway. That narrowed down the locations she could have been.

I could probably hack into the local security feeds and trace her route that way. It would be labor intensive, but effective.

Mom shoved another piled-high cracker into her mouth.

“I’m going to need some coffee for this conversation. Want some?” I picked out the beans I wanted to roast, something with enough punch to keep me awake for several more hours. Harrison’s proposal was practically finished, but now I had a new quest to tackle.

I wonder if Faith needs coffee too…

As if I had manifested the woman, she walked into the kitchen. She stuttered when she found mom and me both looking her way.

“Someone started the party without me?” Faith yawned and then pointed at me. “Yes and please. Give me all the caffeine.”

Mom shook her head. “You two really should be going to bed. It’s past your bedtime.”

“Mom-”

She winked at Faith who came over to hug Mom. “Nice to see you, Constance. You’re looking refreshed.” Faith grabbed a seat next to Mom, before leaning in to whisper something to her. My ears strained to hear it.

Mom smiled then gestured in my direction. “He knows.” She didn’t bother hushing her voice like Faith had.

I set down the canister of beans and glared at Faith. “You knew?”

Confusion flashed across her face, and she put her fingertips on the table. “What exactly are we talking about here…”

“Mom is seeing someone behind my back.”

“Mister, I told you the second I downloaded that dating app. You very well knew that I was on the market.”

“I’m going to be sick.”

“It’s not like I’m going to give you the details of my sex life.”

I pressed the button on the grinder, trying to drown her out.
