My gaze found my friends in the center of the dance floor. From my vantage on the balcony, I could look down and see most of the club. There were a dozen or so other private spaces like this one that surrounded the circular room, sort of like box seats at an arena but with the charm of an old theater, which this was. Red curtains draped like waterfalls between each private booth.

Some of the other partiers danced against the railing, pumping their fists in the air to the music, while others—like me—hung back, lounging on the plush sofas and chairs. In the center of the sofas was a round pit with an ice bucket filled with various alcohols and mixers. Around that was gorgeous glassware, nicely arranged, followed by a lip of table for folks to put their drinks on.

I decided that I’d finish my drink and bail. The least I could do was appreciate the booze—I mean, Brittney did pay for it.

As I sat there, my phone buzzed, and a smile lit up my face when I saw the text from my brother's girlfriend, Daisy.

Daisy

Are you in for teaching tomorrow? The kids are excited to see you again and keep asking.

Faith

You know I am. I promised those little rugrats that Auntie Faith would be there every week, rain or shine.

Daisy

OMG I can’t with this Auntie Faith thing. Also, they're teenagers. You realize that, right? I’m not sure they’d appreciate being called rugrats.

Faith

Even more reason to call them that! It will build resilience if I innocently annoy them.

Daisy

I’m not sure there is any evidence that annoying teenagers builds their resilience.

Faith

You’re the librarian, you would know.

Daisy

That’s not how being a librarian works.

Faith

Semantics…

Daisy

Oh, boy.

Faith

Oh, boy, as in you’re so lucky to have me in your life?

Daisy

LOL something like that.

Faith

Well, I’m lucky I gained you as a consequence of you dating my brother.

Daisy

Aw, that’s so sweet, Faith.
