Faith

Yeah, you’re way nicer than him.

Daisy

Well, that’s true. ;)

Faith

So, yes, I’m the best. You’re the best. And I will see the rugrats tomorrow at 5 p.m. sharp.

Daisy

Thanks, Faith. I appreciate it. See you then!

I tossed my phone in my lap and polished off the rest of my drink when I noticed movement in my periphery.

It was a man sitting in the same type of private seat as me, a few booths over. It was dark, so I couldn’t be a hundred percent sure, but my gut was telling me that I recognized him. And with the intensity of his stare, it seemed like he recognized me as well. I squinted to get a better look. The man’s outline looked familiar. Broad shoulders, a lean yet muscular chest, with hair that looked like it hadn’t seen the inside of a barbershop in months. The scowl was the most identifiable part of him.

I was ninety-nine percent sure it was Sebastian Steele.

Did I just manifest the man?

Was he like Beetlejuice? Think his name three times and he appeared?

Just then, someone walked up to him, taking his attention away from me. I tucked a stray hair behind my ear, my heart kickstarting in a way that sent my fight-or-flight senses into overdrive.

It was officially time to get the hell out of here.

TWO

SEBASTIAN

I was not a club guy.

Hell, I wasn’t even a city guy. Give me my cabin in the woods, a strong internet connection, and I’d be fine.

Better than fine.

Sometimes, however, duty called and to keep my business thriving, I had to answer.

Tonight, for instance, I had to spend time in one of my least favorite places in the world. Not that this club was bad, it wasn’t my taste, but even I could tell that the details were impeccable partially because Luna Marks owned this club and a handful more of the hottest clubs in the city and she didn’t half ass anything. She also always insisted on doing business where she worked. It meant every once in a while I had to make the trek into the city and play nice.

She kept me busy and her ever-expanding empire meant she needed a lot of digital security, which I handled flawlessly for her. I usually trekked to the city once or twice a week, less if I could manage it. I usually packed my days when I did come to the city to maximize my meetings and my time here. Client relations were a necessary evil.

Luna kept being called away to tend to emergencies, which left me sitting on the leather sofa of the private booth overlooking the dance floor.

The space between my eyes throbbed as the music boomed in surround sound. I’d have to leave soon; otherwise, I’d have a full-blown headache to manage. I didn’t want to let anything derail my plans of heading back to my place tonight. The drive could take up to two hours, but the longer I stayed here, the more I risked being too tired to drive. Sure, I had my apartment here in the city, but I tried to avoid spending more than a couple of nights in a row there. For as long as I’d spent in the city, I’d never grown accustomed to it. I much preferred the solitude of my place upstate, where I could be close to nature.

At this point, I was nearing thirty-six hours away from home. Far longer than normal.

I needed Luna to return so we could finish discussing her needs for her latest venture, a small casino and nightclub in New Jersey. The job would break me into the highly competitive casino industry, which could be great for business. Then I’d get the hell out of here.

As I continued to wait, growing more impatient, I glanced around the room, taking notice of the other people in the highly coveted private booths that lined the balcony.

I felt her before I saw her.

She attracted attention wherever she went, whether she tried to or not.
