“I’m sorry,” I blubber, the apology tumbling out of me. “What I did to you was so wrong. I should have told you the truth from the start, but I was so afraid you wouldn’t want me. And then time passed and we got closer and it just became harder and harder to admit the truth… even to myself. But I never stopped to think about how it would feel for you. I was being selfish, which is the opposite of loving someone.” My breath catches, my words starting to wobble and spurt out in short little gasps. “I just can’t have someone else’s kid when you’re the only guy I’ve ever truly been in love with.” I squeak the last part, then cover my mouth with the back of my hand. My stomach is jerking with silent sobs as he stands there staring atme.

He’s not saying anything and it’s killing me.

What’s he thinking? What’s he going to say or do or?—

He moves. Stepping an inch closer, he settles his hand on my cheek as a girl glides past us. She gives us a curious glance but keeps walking. Casey doesn’t seem to notice her as he lifts my chin. His thumb rubs over my skin as his eyes grow a shade darker.

“Fuck it, you don’t have to do this.”

“What?” My face bunches with confusion.

“The kid’s mine. No matter what any test says, it’s mine, because…” His lips twitch with a smile that seems hesitant before growing with confidence. “You’re mine.”

“I’m… yours?” I blink, my slow-ass brain struggling to wrap my head around what he just said. “You want me? I mean, after everything I did, you still want me?”

His eyes smile before his lips do, and I barely have time to process what the hell is going on before his mouth covers mine. He cups my cheeks as he kisses me with blatant possessiveness.

He doesn’t just claim my mouth…

He conquers it.

CHAPTER 40

CASEY

I slide my tongue into her mouth, owning her because I’ve finally figured it out.

She’s mine.

Fuck, that felt good to say.

When she pulls back for air, she stares at me like she still can’t believe it, so I give her a pointed look and growl the word “Mine” before planting one more firm kiss on her lips, then taking her hand and pulling her away from school.

She trots after me, struggling to keep up with my quick feet as I practically drag her down the path.

“Where are we going?”

“I just need to be with you,” I murmur.

She doesn’t seem to mind that answer, a smile curling her lips as I hurry us right around to the back of the hockey arena.

“Where are you taking me?”

“My secret spot.” I wink at her.

Thankfully, she follows me without question as I lead her to a fence that borders the edge of the school. Beyond it is a wooded area, thick with trees and foliage. No one really comes around this way because of the high fence, but I found a chink in its armor and duck low, holding the fence for Caroline so she can scramble through the gap.

“How have you not told me about this?” She slips her hand in mine again, and we take big steps over the bushes and roots.

“Asher and I found it last year and decided to stay quiet about it. Figured it’s nice to have a place to go where no one can find you. I hardly ever come here, but it’s closer than Hockey House, and I don’t want to bump into anyone going to your dorm.”

“Wow,” she murmurs. “I thought you’d never want to talk to me again.”

“I didn’t.” I turn to give her a sad smile. “That lasted for about a minute, and then I was fucking miserable without you.”

She bites her lip, looking like she’s trying not to cry again. Her eyes glow with a glassy smile, and I brush my thumb over her lips.

“I’m sorry it took me so long to figure it out. I was being a stubborn prick and felt like it’d make me weak not to punish you with a decent cold-shouldering, you know?”
