She lets out a soft squeal, and I have to shush her. “Don’t give it away.”

“I won’t, but just give it to her right now because I have to see her face.”

“Okay, okay,” I whisper, holding up my hand to calm her down.

Walking into the living room, I spot Mikayla and Caroline playing Just Dance and have to pause for a minute to watch her, because she’s so fucking gorgeous and she’s all mine. Her red curls bounce as she jumps and spins, her laughter filling the space as she beats Mikayla.

“Ugh!” Mikayla tips her head back. “We have to go again.”

“Nope, she’s mine.” I step into the room. “I need to talk to her; you guys can dance later.”

“Okay, fine.” Mikayla gives me a pointed look, but once her back is turned to Caroline, her smile grows huge, her eyes sparkling just as brightly as Rachel’s did.

I tip my head, ushering her away while Caroline looks at me like she knows I’m up to something.

Crossing her arms, she tips her head with narrowed eyes. “What’s going on?”

“I have a surprise for you.”

“O-kay.”

“Sit.” I point at the couch, resting the box next to it.

Taking a seat opposite her, I take her hands and study her expression closely. Hopefully I’ve done the right thing. Hopefully she wants to have this as much as I want to give it to her.

“I bought you something.”

“Aw.” She squeezes my hand. “Why do you look so nervous about giving it to me?”

“Because I really want you to want it.”

Rachel makes a little squeak from the doorway, and I whip around to bulge my eyes at her.

“Sorry,” she whispers, raising her hand and moving out of the room.

Caroline starts to laugh. “Casey, you’re starting to freak me out. What’d you get me?”

“Okay.” I sigh. “Look, I know it’s a big commitment, and if you’re really not ready, you can say no.”

Her eyebrows dip together. “Are you about to propose or something?”

“No.” I laugh out the word. “Baby, come on…”

“Well, what, then?”

Biting my bottom lip, I check her expression one last time before reaching back for the box and carefully opening the lid. “I bought us a puppy.”

She gasps, quickly checking the box like I might be bullshitting her.

But nope, there, nestled in a fluffy blanket, is a sleeping ball of fur.

“You bought us a puppy?” Her voice is so high and squeaky, it wakes the dog.

The little guy jumps to his feet, letting out a squawk before trying to climb out of the box.

“It’s a shih tzu something. They’re not really sure exactly what he’s made of, but there’s definitely shih tzu in there. I picked him up from the pound. A whole litter was left there six weeks ago, and they’ve been adopting them out. I saw this little dude and couldn’t resist.”

“Aw, hello, little one.” Caroline reaches for him, her eyes alight and beautiful as she greets him, kissing his face and letting him lick the tip of her nose. “I love him.” She gives me a swooning smile and holds him close, kissing the top of his head. “Does he have a name?”
