“Next time, we’ll be able to do an ultrasound and hear the baby’s heartbeat.”

My stomach drops.

“I know you haven’t decided yet, but if you still have the baby in a month, I’d like you to come back for another checkup. In the meantime, I’m going to suggest some prenatal vitamins that you should start taking. Just in case you decide to continue with the pregnancy.” Her smile is kind as she scribbles something on a small notepad.

Caroline starts biting her thumbnail, and I gently take her hand, threading my fingers between hers. I’m not even sure why. I don’t hold chicks’ hands. It feels way too intimate.

Staring down at our intertwined fingers, I’m surprised by how natural it seems.

She squeezes my hand, and I rub my thumb over her knuckles.

“Hey, it’s going to be okay.” The doctor smiles before ripping off the top sheet of paper and passing it to us. “I know this is overwhelming and scary, but you’ve got this. You just need to make a choice and then embrace it. The fact that you’ve got each other for support is huge. Whatever you decide, you’re gonna be fine.”

“Thanks,” I murmur, rising from my chair, suddenly desperate to get out of here.

She thinks we’re a couple.

I should correct her, but I don’t… and Caroline doesn’t either.

Shit. This is bad.

I nudge Caroline out of the room, and we head out of there as fast as we can. I need to hustle or I’m gonna be late for practice. That’s the excuse I give her as I unlock the car.

We don’t say anything as I drive back to Huxley Hall. Caroline’s biting her thumbnail again, but I don’t take her hand this time. I can’t. I shouldn’t.

We’re not a couple, and we can’t go acting like one, right? That’ll only confuse the situation more. I don’t know what the hell that shit was I pulled in the doctor’s office, but I can’t go crossing that line again.

I punch the brakes, and we jerk to a quick stop outside her building.

“Sorry,” I mutter, unable to look at her.

She’s staring at me. I can feel her gaze burning my skin.

“Okay, well…” She opens her mouth to say I don’t know what, but then she lets out a sigh and leaves my car.

The door shuts, and I finally turn in time to watch her walk away.

“Fuck.” I tip my head back, then bang it on the headrest. “Fuck!”

Peeling away from the curb with a squeal, I race toward the arena and pull into a parking spot next to Ethan’s truck.

I’m not late yet, but I still run like I am, busting into the locker room and stalking to the bench.

“Where have you been?” Asher looks at me.

“Nowhere,” I bark.

Connor and Riley share a confused frown while Baxter looks at me like he’s trying to read my mind. I see them out of the corner of my eye, but I refuse to look their way. Guys walk into the locker room pissed off sometimes; that doesn’t mean we have to talk about it.

“Okay, man.” Asher slaps my shoulder. “See you out there.”

He files out of the locker room with the others until I’m the only one left. At least I think I am. It’s not until after I plow my fist into my locker that I notice Liam in the corner. I let out a heavy sigh and rest my forehead against the cold metal.

“Is she keeping it?”

“I don’t know,” I mumble.

“’Kay. Well, I’m here if you need me, all right?”
