“Dinner will be served shortly,” he murmured, never taking his eyes off her.

“You have a lovely home,” she uttered nervously.

“Thank you. I have found I like it best when I am the most interesting thing in the room.”

She bit her tongue. There was a good chance he was the most interesting thing in the room. Dressed in a suit that made him look more like an undertaker from a horror movie, there was an excellent chance he was the most interesting thing in the room wherever he went. Angelina wondered where the pompous valet had taken her car. A nagging feeling told her she would need it soon.

“Would you like a tour before dinner?”

Before she could ask him to lead her to the hole he would keep her in and tell him she preferred non-scented lotion, a woman sailed into the room. Angelina was surprised by the bright colors, long unkept hair, and beads attached to everything she wore.

“Reggie, my darling, when are we eating?”

“Soon, Mother.”

Angelina did a double take. This woman was his mother. The woman was color and sunshine, while he was blank and bleak. Was he sure that was his mother?

“And who is this lovely woman?”

“This is our guest for the evening. Ms. Angelina Davis.”

“It is so good to see a young woman in our home,” she gushed, enveloping Angelina in a hug that almost smothered her.

“Thank you, Mrs. Regent.”

“Pss,” she wagged a finger at Angelina. “Mrs. Regent was my mother-in-law. Dreadful woman,” his mother shuddered. “I am Liza.”

“Thank you, Liza.”

“This one is nicer than the last one.”

Angelina beamed. Reginald was a unique man, but his mother sounded like a good time. At least dinner wouldn’t be boring.

“Mother, Angelina has been fully vetted and found acceptable.”

“I’m sorry.” Angelina’s attention snapped back to her date. “Fully vetted and acceptable? What does that mean?”

“Reggie has been in a snit since his third wife left him,” Liza waved her off. “She didn’t even stay long enough to get any of the bonus money he offers in his contracts.”

“Third wife?” Angelina gaped. “Bonus money? You have a contract for your spouse that includes bonuses?”

“Nothing for you to worry about,” Reginald shot his mother a warning look. “We can get into the tiered salary system I have in place later.”

“Oh,” Angelina nodded. She knew she looked like a bobblehead, but there was nothing she could do about it. Her only thoughts centered on getting out of there alive and killing Jake. Max was just going to have to deal with it. “This is a lot for a first date.”

“Think of it more as a step toward a position beyond anything your imagination can conjure.”

“Sir, dinner will be served in the ballroom.” The maid appeared and disappeared in seconds.

“Oh good,” Liza clapped her hands. “I love eating in the ballroom.”

Of course, this place had a ballroom. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind that it was white. Angelina was baffled about the spouse position. He was sadly mistaken if he thought she was getting into any position with him. Biting her tongue, she smiled while she thought of the many ways to inflict pain on Jake. Quirky billionaire her ass.

Reginald kept her hand tucked on his arm as he led her down the maze of hallways. Angelina had no chance of making it out of here without help. She was a mouse that couldn’t find her cheese.

A door opened as they neared it. Reginald ushered her inside and stood back, letting her take it all in. It was a room you would see in a movie filmed in a castle. Expensively ornate, designed with luxury dripping from every corner, and all white. Where did they find so many things in white? What was this guy’s deal?

Angelina realized her mouth was hanging open. Snapping it closed, she smiled what she hoped came off as genuine. “It is breathtaking.” It wasn’t a total lie. He could take it however he wanted it.
