“You are absolutely right. I have no idea why you cannot function as an adult. Who are you running from now? How did you even get through the gate?”

Rose felt Franny move closer. She could hear the clicking noise her phone made as it tried to send a text. Tank, Warren, Birdy, and Ladybug would be on their way as soon as it was delivered. Lucas would find out exactly what happened when he messed with the Scorpion Warriors. Enraging her overprotective husband wasn’t the smartest choice either. It didn’t matter who got him first. The result would be the same. It wasn’t looking good for her brother.

“That was the wrong move.”

The ice in Lucas’ voice caught Rose off guard. His body stiffened as he reached behind him to pull out his gun. He aimed it at Franny with a steady, practiced hand. Rose couldn’t believe her eyes.

“Lucas, what the hell are you thinking?” Rose clamored, sliding in front of Franny. “Franny is the president’s old lady. She is not the woman you want to pull a gun on. You remember him. The big guy who hauled your ass to my house before all this mess started. Tank will end you if you hurt her.”

“Sorry, Rosey. This is the way it has to be. I don’t have a choice.”

“What happened to the prospect?” Franny pressed.

“I had to do what I had to do. It isn’t like Warren can catch me. We’ll be gone before they know you two are missing.”

Fear grew, spreading throughout her body. The man standing before them was not the Lucas she knew. This one was clinging to the edge of sanity, pushed well past the point of reasoning. Overwhelming desperation made him dangerous.

“What’s the plan?” Rose asked with more calm than she felt.

“You two are coming with me.”

“In case you didn’t notice, we are on lockdown. You cannot sneak us out the front gate.”

“They will shoot you dead before you get halfway down the driveway,” Franny warned.

“We aren’t going out the gate,” Lucas huffed. “Do I look that stupid?”

“Lucas, what are you doing? It’s not too late to change your mind. How much do you need? I can ask Warren.”

“There is no changing my mind. If you cooperate, your men will have you back tomorrow.”

“So we are going to hide here?” Rose frowned. “Did you come up with this plan all by yourself?”

“Phones on the counter,” Lucas barked.

Rose and Franny laid their phones on the counter and waited to see what he would do next.

“We are going out the back door. No shit, Rosey. It would break my heart if I had to shoot you.”

“You shoot me, and it will be the last thing you ever do,” she warned.

Lucas motioned with the gun toward the back door. Rose walked cautiously as Franny shuffled her feet. Her brother didn’t seem to mind them taking their time. When they were beside him, he slapped his arm across the doorway, stopping them.

“Remember, you walk out of here all nice and normal like, and no one dies. I’m not the only one here. The rest of the crew is hidden. If people come rushing out of the clubhouse, they will pick them off one at a time before anyone can spot where the shot came from. These guys are no joke. They won’t hesitate to make you both widows.”

Rose and Franny nodded.

“We need to hurry,” Rose gulped. “If Franny’s text went through, they will be coming.”

“If you don’t want to watch your husbands get mowed down, I suggest you get a move on.”

Franny opened the screen door cautiously. Rose held her breath as they stepped out into the sun. A small side-by-side sat beside the patio.

“How did you get that in here without anyone noticing you?”

“Electric,” Lucas winked. “It is almost silent, and it helps to know where the cameras are.”

The clubhouse door banged open. Their guys poured out, fanning out across the yard.
