My head swings back and forth as they volley words in a game I don’t know. I’m not sure where to look or what to say. It’s all going over my head.

Sonia puts her hands on her hips. “For fuck’s sake, Nate, not everything is about you!”

“You’re damn right it’s about me!”

Wait…I introduced him as Nathan. She called him Nate. “You two know each other?”

Sonia’s face falls, the tears that were threatening to fall earlier now gliding down her cheeks.

Our eyes meet for only a moment, but she looks away.

“Knoweach other?” Nate scoffs. “Sonia is my ex-girlfriend.”

My heart stops.

SONIA

I want to die.Right now.

The news lingers in the air, falling heavy over all of us.

As if in slow motion, Edwin turns toward me, and I can’t even bear to look at him. To see the betrayal in his eyes. Imagining it is hard enough.

“Ex-girlfriend?”

I shut my eyes. Can’t I just wish this all away?

“Sonia?” He sounds mad.

He’s never directed his anger at me.

And I am praying he doesn’t start now.

“It’s true.” I keep my eyes averted. “I’m…Nate’s ex-girlfriend.”

Edwin is silent for a long moment. “I think I need to sit down.” He retreats to the edge of his desk to lean.

Nate’s eyes are growing wilder by the second, the same way he looked when he cornered me in my apartment. “Are you two really expecting me to believe that you didn’t do this on purpose?”

Is he insane? “Why in the world would I sleep with your dad on purpose?”

“Sleepwith?!” Nate gapes.

I throw my arms up. “You were the one just accusing me of it!”

Nate looks behind me at his father. “He didn’t know, did he? You didn’t tell him.”

I still haven’t looked back at Edwin. “I didn’t know how.”

“Disgusting.”

My gaze is drawn back to Edwin.

His eyes are trained on the floor, hands gripping the side of his desk.

I did that. By lying to him by omission, I think I broke him.
