“Edwin, I’m not a perfect person either.”

I take the moment to close the space between us, take her cheeks in both my hands, so thankful she doesn’t draw away.

“You are to me.”

“I’m not. I shouldn’t be.” She blinks, tears welling in her eyes.

“How can I prove to you how perfect you are? How good we could be for each other? Just say the word and I’ll do anything.” The words come so fast, they’re stumbling from my mouth.

Sonia grips the lapels of my jacket, half-laughing. “The door, Edwin.”

“I don’t care who sees.” And with that, I kiss her with everything I have in me.

A kiss through which I try to give her all of me.

I’ve never felt this way about anyone. Not even themothers of my children.

I’m about to be half a century old, and it’s taken me way too long to figure out what’s valuable in life. I won’t lose this. Not again.

Not after all the people and love I’ve sacrificed in my life to stay the immature, cold businessman I’ve been my whole life.

Sonia’s hands slip up my chest and hook around my neck, pulling me closer to her, her hips brushing up against me as our lips meet. She might be tentative, but her body is vibrating at the same frequency as mine.

A deep voice comes from the door. “What the hell?”

Sonia pushes me off, touching her mouth. “Oh, my god.”

My eyes fly to the doorway of my office.

“Nathan.”

He’s wearing slacks and a dress shirt. He’s even got his suit jacket slung over his shoulder.

My heart sings at the sight of him as it bleeds for his poor timing.

“It’s so good to see you.” I want to go toward him, embrace him, but knowing Nate, he’d run away before I could get even a foot away. “I’m sorry, you’ve walked in at such an…inopportune moment.”

Nate stares at me. “What isshedoing here?”

If I wasn’t so stunned, I’d ask him to mind his manners.

“Um, Nathan, this is Sonia Hill.” I gesture toward her. “She’s our operations manager at the club.

They both just stare at each other.

“Alright, then.” I try to laugh to cut the tension in the room, but it doesn’t seem to do the trick. “I’m so glad you came, but what are you doing here?”

Nate is pale as a sheet, expression unreadable. “I wasthinking about what you said last night and I… Open door. Ha…” He runs his hand through his blond hair. “You’ve got a really strange sense of humor, Dad.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“This is why you came to New York, huh?” Nate directs the question at Sonia.

“Please, I didn’t mean–” Her voice tremors.

What the hell is going on?

“You came all the way here just to fuck my dad? Is this some twisted plan you’re both in on to fuck up my whole life?”
