“No. No, no, no. Sonia. Wake up, honey. Stay awake.”

She doesn’t move.

“Fuck!”

By the time the police officers arrive, I have undone her bindings and pulled her into my lap, trying my best to get her to regain consciousness, the blood-soaked rag in my hand starting to drip.

I refuse to leave her side for even a second.

“Given her CT scan,I’d say the damage is mild.” The doctor’s tone is pragmatic. “Worst case scenario, she might experience a bout of temporary amnesia once she awakens.”

I slide my hands into my pockets.

We both look at the scan of her brain.

She’s pointed out various details of it to me, but I haven’t retained any of it. “When will she wake up?”

The doctor sighs. “Well, that is something we will have to keep an eye on. With injuries like these, it can often be hard for patients to awaken from sleep. It’s a good sign that she came to when you found her. We just need to be patient.”

I swallow. I’ve never been good with patience. Case and point, me marching up to Sonia’s door this morning before seven am.

“She owes you a huge thanks, Mr. Lyons.” The doctor touches my arm.

I attempt to smile, but I only grimace.

Sonia wouldn’t have been in this situation if it weren’t for my club. My money. Me. It’s like I ruin every life I touch these days. “Thank you, Dr. Chen.”

I return to Sonia’s bedside after the doctor leaves. I’ve been beside her every step of the way, bristling whenever the doctors need space in order to check on her.

I want to be able to rescue her. Always.

But still, I’ve fallen short.

I sit at her bedside.

I can’t believe only a couple of weeks ago, I was sitting in the same hospital next to my unconscious son. This is more tragedy than I would wish upon my worst enemy. I’m just thankful she’s alive.

I grab her hand, warming it in mine.

There’s a bandage across her head now. But other than that, she’s still the same Sonia. Gorgeous raven locks splayed on the pillows, pillowy lips parted as she sleeps. Her dark lashes have created a slight sheen of mascara under her eyes.

Perhaps it is my fate to sit at the bedsides of those I love for not having appreciated the gravity of love for the pasthowever many years. Perhaps I am doomed to this existence forever.

If that is the way it must be, then fine. I accept my fate.

My talk with Abigail sticks in my brain. I’m not just running after Sonia.

I’m sticking by her side no matter what.

SONIA

I wakeup in what appears to be a hospital bed, my mouth dry.

The room is dark, illuminated only by city light through the window.

My head pounds with pain.
