What the hell happened?

I was in the media room. But I was scared.

There’s something about the safe. Did I open it? Why?

A man… pulling me by my hair and the barrel of that gun.

Shit!

Edwin. He was there. His dark eyes full of worry. His fingers to my mouth as he peeled the tape away. His words. “It’s okay. It’s okay. Fuck the safe.”

I smile.

Underneath the window, there is a lump on the couch meant for visitors.

I squint and a few details start coming through, though they’re blurry. A mess of hair, long legs jutting over the arm, a suitcoat used as a makeshift blanket.

“Edwin.” The realization fills me with euphoria, though my voice is more of a croak.

He found me, saved me,andhe stayed for me.

What a fool.

I love him.

“Edwin.” This time, the sound is clearer.

His form moves, wriggling out of whatever sleep he’s managed to find.

I almost feel bad, but not enough to stop. I need to see him. Need to tell him what I was so afraid I’d never get a chance to.

“Edwin, I’m awake.”

Edwin pushes himself up from the couch and rubs his eyes. “Huh?”

I wait for him to come to, to realize this isn’t a dream. It’s real.

He blinks a few times, focusing on me. “Sonia?”

All I do is smile.

Edwin rushes to my bedside, sinking down onto the miniscule bit of bed and touches my face. “How are you feeling?”

“Okay. Alive.”

He smiles. “Thank god for that.”

I lift my hand up to touch his. It’s like my limbs aren’t my own. “I’m thirsty.” My voice is hoarse.

“Oh god, yeah, of course. Here–” Edwin fetches me a glass of water at top speed.

He slides his hand around the back of my head, helping me to lift my mouth to the lip of the glass. “There we go.”

My body unwinds as I swallow the water. “Mm. Good. Thank you.”

Edwin returns to me after setting the glass aside, gripping my hands in his.

I look at him. “What happened?”
