“Now you know why, on top of being his employee, ‘me and Edwin’ isn’t a thing, Bridget! It can never be.” I push her to get her out faster. “Now go!”

She glances out the window at the fire escape and then back at me. “You owe me a way better explanation.”

“Fine.”

“You bring the wine next time. No ice cubes. And god help me, but I’m not coming back to Queens.”

“Sonia, please…” Nate’s voice is no more than a whimper.

I begin to bid Bridget to leave again, but she’s already ahead of the game. “Going, going!”

And in the blink of an eye, she scrambles out of sight, maneuvering the fire escape, the clanging of her feet growing more and more distant with each passing second.

Leaping across the apartment, I make it to the door.

When my hand lands on the handle, though, I pause. Take a deep breath.

I was so concerned with Bridget being here that I didn’t even consider how seeing Nate would make me feel. It’s like worms are crawling along my skin, my gut churns. Uneasy, nauseous.

Better get it over with.

When I open the door, Nate is leaning against the doorframe, his forehead resting on the back of his wrist.

I’d swoon if I still wanted him. But I don’t.

His clear blue eyes are overcome by the gray ring around his irises. And though the corners of his eyes are drooping, he smiles.

Goddamn, he’s got a beautiful smile. Big, wide, bright, dimples in his cheeks.

My stomach drops. I know where I’ve seen those dimples before.

Edwin.

I’m so disgusted. Or maybe I’m just disgusting.

“Sonia.”

“You sound surprised. Like you weren’t just pounding on my door crying out my name like a psycho.”

He blushes, runs a hand through his dirty blond hair. He needs to get it cut; it’s starting to touch his shoulders.

“Can I come in?”

“I guess.”

Nate walks into my apartment, glancing around. “Nice place.”

It doesn’t compare to the apartment we shared.

Even when he didn’t have access to his dad’s money, Nate wasn’t broke.

We had a beautiful beachfront condo together so hecould have direct access to the beach even though my commute to work was a pain. “How did you find out my address?”

He avoids looking at me. “Just some research.”

I roll my eyes. “Research? That’s what you call it?”

Nate is quiet. His eyes land on the open window.
