She pretends like she doesn’t hear me, though my voice echoes through the front hall.

“Sonia, wait.” I scramble down the stairs. Thank god for my long legs. I catch up to her and latch my hand to her bicep just as she crosses the threshold into the nightclub.

Sonia turns, jerking her arm out of my hand. “What?!”

I recoil. I hope I haven’t hurt her. I just wanted her to look at me. “Talk to me. Hell, just look at me for a second.”

Sonia makes no effort to run away, thank god. “What do you want, Edwin?”

I have to restrain myself from staggering backward as if she’s pushed me in the chest. “What do I want? I want…”So many things. “You’re acting like yesterday never happened.”

Her eyes fall to my feet. “Because I have to.”

She starts to walk away again, but I follow at her heels.

“Why?” I’m pleading, but right now, I don’t care. I hate this distance she is putting between us.

“Because I work for you.”

“So?”

She gives me a perturbed look over her shoulder. “So,I work for you,and none of that should have happened.”

We wind through the main floor of the club, which won’t be open until later this afternoon. This won’t do. I rush past her and cut her off at the end of the bar, leaning right in her way. “Stop walking away from me.”

“Is that an order as my employer?” She frowns at me.

“No, it’s…” I sigh. Doesn’t she know how she’s breaking my heart, avoiding me like this? “Sonia, I can’t just forget about what happened yesterday.”

Her throat bobs up and down. “You should try.”

“Why?”

“Because it– it–”

“It was wrong?”

A flicker of pain crosses her eye, but it is gone the next second. “Exactly.”

I shake my head. “That’s whereyou’rewrong.”

“Edwin, I’ve been here before. I’ve fucked around with people I shouldn’t have and got into trouble and–”

“Listen to me, Sonia–” I slide my hand through her hair, locking her gaze into mine.

I don’t care if someone walks through. Don’t care if someone sees us on the cameras. I don’t care about anything but Sonia and me right now. “I wasn’t just fucking around.”

The tension on her face slackens. She doesn’t draw away.

“I promise you, I wasn’t just…” I don’t know how I got here. I’ve never been flooded with thoughts of a single woman like this. It must mean that Sonia is special. That we are meant for one another in some way I can’t explain. The harder I try to rationalize it, the more it eludes me. “It’s not just your body that I want. You understand?”

Sonia blinks slowly, her mouth parting. “How can you possibly know that?”

I seal my lips together, searching the depths of her amber eyes. Caverns of secrets I am yet to learn. “Don’t tell me you don’t feel it too.”

“Edwin…”

“Don’t lie to yourself. To either of us.”
