Tilting her head away from my hand, she flushes. “You’ll get over me. Once the thrill is gone. The sneaking around, the–”

“Don’t pretend to tell me who I am or what I’ll do.”

Sonia goes silent, a pained expression on her face.

“Icraveyou, Sonia.” The thrumming in my blood is evidence enough. But so does the fact that she is my first and last thought every single day since the masquerade. “Not just your body, but your mind. I want to know everything about you. I want you in my bed. I want you in my arms. I want to be the one person in the world who knows you the best of anyone.”

I take a step closer, my lips so close to hers I might die. “I want you to know me that way, too.”

“Edwin…”

I can tell her strength is starting to fade. She won’t be able to resist me forever.

Her gaze searches mine. “I need this job.”

“It’s yours. As long as you want it.”

“But what if–”

“I don’t talk about what ifs. I talk about what will.” I frame her face in my hands, sliding my thumbs against her cheekbones. “And youwillbe mine, Sonia. It’s a fact.”

I expect more resistance, more arguments. But her resolve cracks faster than I could have anticipated.

She falls into my chest, her lips landing against mine, hands dragging down my waist and locking into place at my lower back.

My groin presses against her belly, sending my mind spinning. All the things I could do to her. All the things Iwantto do to her.

And yet, more important than all of them is being here with her right now. Letting her know that I’m not just going to use her up like I have all the rest of them.

I haven’t ever been a good man. But I want to be one for Sonia.

Footsteps are the only thing that can break us apart, and as soon as they echo through the upper level, we draw apart from one another.

“Lipstick.” She touches her lower lip.

I swipe my finger over mine, removing the evidence of our clandestine kiss.

“Is someone down there?” Solomon calls out.

I nod in the direction of the back hall, instructing Sonia to go. She rushes out of the club before Solomon can lean over the second-floor railing to spy me.

He peeks over the railing. “Oh, it’s you? What are you doing down here?”

“I, um–” I adjust the knot of my tie. “Just checking that the bar is fully stocked.”

Solomon folds his arms onto the railing, narrowing his eyes at me. “Since when have you–”

My watch gets another notification. Saved by the bell. “Do you mind?” I lift my wrist, pointing to the notification as if he can see.

“You’re hiding something, Edwin. I don’t like it.”

Yes, I am hiding something.

And I do like it. I like it very, very much.
