“Good night, Laney.” Edwin gives a final nod before leaving the kitchen.

If I am to remain here until Nate is ready to surf, so be it. I will make him ready to surf as fast as I can.

And then I’ll leave. I’ll leave it all behind.

Because I’ve got a fucked-up love in my heart that needs to be fixed.

Something is wrong with me. And I can’t be fixed here.

“This was supposed to beguys’night,” Seth hisses as Bridget takes a seat beside him on the leather couch.

“Don’t be a dick, Seth.” Mason pinches his arm.

This is the first time I’ve seen Mason since we’ve returned to New York, our weekly guys’ night. Except tonight, instead of spending it at one of our apartments playing video games, drinking cheap beer, and eating pizza, we’re at the club in the members lounge drinking scotch and listening to soft jazz music wearing suits and ties.

It was my idea to have it here. Ever since realizing that the club might be my next step, I’ve been trying to find more ways to spend time here. Casual, just enough that my reconnaissance won’t be blown.

“How was I supposed to know you idiots would be here?” Bridget bats her eyelashes. “I was just here visiting Sonia!”

Seth just grimaces.

I glance over at Sonia who is talking to a group of members across the way, holding court as the happy hostessshe is as the operations manager. It’s clear she’s beloved here.

I’m starting to get why she remains working at the club rather than allowing my dad to foot the bill for her existence.

Mason clears his throat.

My eyes shoot to him.

“How’ve you been feeling, Nate?”

I raise my eyebrows. “Fine.”

“Just fine?”

I shrug. “Same old, same old.”

Seth asks, “How much longer are you going to keep Laney for PT?”

Bridget scolds, “Don’t say it like she’s his captive, Seth,”

Sonia waltzes over. “Who’s a captive?”

I run my hand over my face. “Oh my god.”

“Laney is Nate’s captive.”

Sonia’s eyes bug out. “What?!”

“It’s not a sex thing,” Bridget clarifies. “Mason was just asking how Nate was doing with his physical therapy.” The brunette gives me a warm smile. “It seems like you’re doing great.”

Bridget has always been a sweetheart. In fact, I’ve known her longer than Seth since Solomon, her father, and my dad are such good friends. We were a few years apart, though.

She was a girly girl, and I was a sporty boy, and never the twain shall meet on that one.
