Once Solomon married Seth’s mom and Seth started coming around, Bridget came around more too. And I’ve always appreciated her gentility. “Thanks, Bridge.”

Sonia takes a seat beside me. “I think that trip really helped. The fresh air.”

My back stiffens.

“Yeah, how was that trip, by the way?” Seth’s eyes move between Mason and me.

“It was great.” I wish I was sitting right beside Seth so I could pinch him.

Seth’s eyes narrow. “What was so great about it?”

I quirk an eyebrow.

Does he know something I don’t? “It was just refreshing.”

“What was so refreshing about it?”

Mason slaps Seth on the arm. “What’s with the third degree, dude?”

Seth balks. “What?! Can’t I ask my friend about his trip? The one I don’t know any of the details of? Other than he supposedly spent two weeks alone withLaney.”

“Supposedly?” Bridget interjects, scrunching her nose. “Did she not go with you?”

It’s subtle, but I see Mason’s leg tense as he inches his foot over toward Seth. He steps on Seth’s toe and glares at our friend.

So, Seth knew about Mason’s appearance at the cabin, huh? I wonder if Seth was the one who encouraged him.

Worse, what if he knows what happened between all of us?

“She went with me, and we had a very nice time,” I attempt to close the door on this conversation.

“Of course she went with him, Bridget.” Seths tone is cool. He’s never been very nice to Bridget.

Mason and I have tried to stick up for her in the past, but Seth doesn’t seem very receptive to it.

Bridget flicks her hair over her shoulder. “Don’t say that like I’m dumb for asking.”

Seth raises his brows and sips his scotch.

“You’rethe one who said ‘supposedly.’ What wasthatsupposed to make me think?”

“You’resupposedto not read into everything I say.”

Bridget gapes at him. “I’m notsupposedto do anything, especially not when you tell me to do it, Seth.”

“Okay, Bridge, let’s stay calm.” Sonia pats Bridget’s arm, then looks to me for some help.

Mason, however, picks up the mantle. “Let’s talk about something else, huh? I like what you’ve done with the place. The new rugs are really–”

Seth is glowering at Bridget. “This is why I hate having you around. You’re just always reading into everything I say when it’sjustsomething I’ve said.”

Bridget laughs, though there is no humor in it. Her eyes tell the rest of the story, trembling with unshed tears.

She’s so sensitive, which isn’t a bad thing except for the fact her stepbrother is Seth, who somehow manages to be one of the coldest assholes I know.

“You’re right, this was stupid.” She gets to her feet and walks off, mumbling, “Have fun.”

“Bridget!” Sonia calls out after her, but Bridget doesn’t turn back around. Sonia glares back at Seth. “Nice going, asshole.”
