I’d like to lean back and relax, but being alone with Mason has put me on edge. What is there to talk about other than the elephant in the room? “I’ve been good.”

He cocks his head to the side, widens his green eyes, cajoling me to say more.

“Okay, fine. Honestly, things have been weird.”

He sighs. “I’m glad it’s not just me.”

I shake my head. “Laney has been so distant.”

“I know, she won’t respond to my texts.”

“She’s not talking to you either? I thought she might have decided she wanted you over me or…”

Mason leans forward on the edge of his seat. “No, not at all. I haven’t heard from her. I thought maybe you two were–”

“No!”

“Thank god! I mean. Kind of.”

We both sit there for a moment.

So, Laney’s not talking to me, and she’s not talking to Mason either.

“You think she just used us?” Mason asks in a careful way.

I gulp. “I guess it’s possible. But that’s not Laney.”

He shakes his head. “No, you’re right, that’s not her at all.”

We could sit here and speculate about Laney all day, although I’m not sure how helpful that would be.

“How areyoufeeling about…everything?”

Mason’s eyes scan our surroundings as if someone might be listening in on our conversation. “Good. I mean. Fine. I mean–”

“It’s complicated.”

He sighs and looks into the pool of his drink. “It’s complicated, that’s true.”

Fuck it, I’m just going to say it. “I miss it. The cabin.”

Mason clutches his heart. “Me too, dude. Like desperately.”

I grin from ear to ear. “Seriously?”

“Obviously! I mean, that was like…” Mason looks off.

I can almost see the memories replaying in his head all at once like an enormous symphony. “Incredible.”

“Yeah.”

“And like, don’t take this the wrong way, because you’re my best friend, and I’m not likeintoyou or–”

I nod. “No, same page, we’re on the same page.”

Mason smiles. “But that hike! Oh, my fucking god, I haven’t felt that good like ever.”

“Likeever.”
