Seth is nonplussed, sipping his drink.

Sonia shoots to her feet and follows Bridget out of the main lounge and down one of the halls.

No one speaks for a long while. What the hell do you say to that?

However, Seth is the first one to find the confidence. “She’s spoiled.”

I scoff. “Seriously, Seth?”

Seth holds up his hands as if he’s somehowinnocent. “What?!”

“You’re a jerk,” Mason retorts. “She doesn’t deserve that.”

Seth hardens his jaw. “Come on, you know she doesn’t like me either. It’s a mutual disdain. She can dish it, but she can’t take it?”

Mason and I exchange a look.

Our friend notices. “What?! Why are you looking at each other like that?”

I shake my head. “She didn’t do anything, dude.”

Mason backs me up. “Yeah, she was just existing and trying to be nice, and you pounced on her.”

Seth looks between the two of us, frowning. “You’re seriously on her side?”

“I’m always on her side.” I swig my scotch.

Having a little sister myself, I feel a protectiveness over Bridget.

Seth was nineteen when their parents got married, so I know they’re only siblings in theory rather than practice, but someone needs to look out for Bridget when her stepbrother is always on her case. “You get mad at her for just existing.”

Seth huffs and tightens his lips together.

I can tell he’s debating whether or not he’s going to agree with me on that one.

“Go talk to her,” Mason encourages.

Seth’s mouth drops open. “I will not! This is guys’ night. Now the girls are gone, so–”

Mason shakes his head. “I don’t think we’re going to have fun until you go check on her.”

Seth takes a deep breath, shutting his eyes tight. “I guess Iwasharsh.”

At least he can recognize that.

Getting to his feet, he growls, “Fine,” and stalks off in the direction Bridget and Sonia disappeared to.

Leaving Mason and me alone for the first time in a long time.

“They’re impossible,” Mason mutters.

“I agree.”

We both sip our drinks as the music keeps playing. I remember as a kid thinking jazz night sucked. Now, here I am, enjoying it.

Oh, how times change.

“How are you doing?” Mason leans forward. “Like actually.”
