My heart expands. I never thought of it like that.

Abigail bumps my shoulder. “Besides, this world needs more love, not less of it. There’s no reason to believe you’re not worthy of both of them.”

I’m still not convinced. “At the same time? Both of them? I mean, I haven’t been in a relationship in years, let alonetwo.”

Handing Bridget a napkin to blow her nose as she sniffles, Sonia smiles at me. “Well, I think you need to reframe it. No one would be coming into a throuple dynamic perfect.”

I blanche at the word throuple.

Sonia points at me. “Don’t check out on me, Laney. Stay out of your head.”

“Sorry, sorry.”

With an approving nod, Sonia goes on. “You’ve got built-in baggage. Everyone does. Nate and Mason can commiserate on the best way to care for you and vice versa. You have access to two best friends in a profound way. That’s special and healthy, I’d think.”

I pause. Then smile. A real one. Not polite, not pained. “When did you become such a guru?”

Sonia holds out her left hand, twiddling her fingers so her engagement ring creates a light show. “I got my license the other day.”

We all laugh.

With the support of my new friends, I almost feel silly that I pushed Nate and Mason away.

However, in the time without them, the emptiness inside me has grown to massive proportions.

I chew my lower lip, scan their faces. “You’ll put in a good word for me, then?”

All three of them whip out their phones and start texting. Sonia finishes her message first, putting her phone back in her purse, a triumphant smile on her lips. “Consider it done.”

My heart races. For the first time in a long time from sheer, delicious adrenaline.

Now that the universe knows, the world knows, maybe the gift of their love will boomerang back to me.

As long as I haven’t lost my chance.

“How do I look?”

Nate scans me up and down. He whips out a lint roller and gives it a pass down the arm of my suit jacket. “There. That’s better.”

He steps back, extending his arms outward. “How about me?”

I measure up my friend with a squint. “Tie needs straightening.”

He reaches to wriggle the knot, but I interrupt him. “Here, I got it.”

The club is quiet as I work the Windsor knot back and forth so it’s not as off-kilter as before.

“Thanks, Mase.”

I give my friend a smile, then step back. “Okay, you look perfect.”

“So do you.”

Both of us glance back at the table set in the middle of the club.
