Sonia smiles at me and takes another sip.

When I found out Sonia was Nate’s ex-girlfriend and that she’d be moving in with Edwin as his partner, I wasmorethan confused. However, in the first few days, it became clear the arrangement somehow suited all of us.

As for my part, I tiptoed around her at first, worried that she’d see me with Nate and think I was crossing some sort of line.

But she’s always been so kind to me. Plus, she and Edwin are head over heels.

I don’t think she has even an inkling of want for her ex.

It wasn’t always easy for Nate.

I know as much because I was the sounding board for his discomfort, the confusion he had when it didn’t hurt as much, and I was the first to hear the realization that shedding his past life meant letting Sonia go. Letting her live her life. Even if it was with his father.

But I think it helped he had something else to put his attention to. His injuries. Recovery.

Maybe even me.

So, by the time Sonia moved in, everything felt easy.

Now, I’m lucky to call her a friend.

She takes another sip. “How’s Nate doing today?”

“Good. Great.” That’s the answer every day now that he’s walking. One of these days they’re going to hear me say, “Great,” and wonder why the hell they’re paying me.

“And you?”

I nod. “Good.”

Sonia tilts her head to the side. “I’m not convinced.”

“I’m fine. Howabout that?”

“That’s more convincing, but now I have to ask why you’re just ‘fine’.”

Can I tell Sonia the weird feelings I have about her ex-boyfriend?

“It’s about Nate, isn’t it?”

Well, I guess that answers that.…

“How did you know that?”

“Because you’d have to be an idiot not to see something is going on between you two.”

“Nothing’s goingon, it’s just–”

“You know what I mean.” Sonia wears a knowing smile.

I drop my latest carrot in the hummus and cross my arms over my chest. “It’s really nothing. We’re just friends.”

“Uh-huh. And Edwin and I only sleep in the same bed to save on the heating bill. Come on, spill.”

I have to laugh. “Sonia, this is weird! Isn’t it weird?”

“A little, but it’s hard to outweird me after what I’ve been through.”

“Fair…”
