Sonia pulls out one of the stools tucked under the island and pops a squat. She’s not letting me get off easy.

“Spill. What’s going on?”

I groan, head tipping back. But she just waits, staring at me, awaiting my reveal with her flaming amber eyes. “This trip.”

“What about it?”

“It’s making me nervous.”

“Why?”

“Jesus, what’s with the third degree?”

Sonia laughs, then swigs her protein shake. “Just trying to get down to the bottom of things.”

“Look, you said it yourself. There’s an energy between Nate and me.”

“And you haven’t followed through on it because…?”

I look at her like she’s crazy. “Says the ex-girlfriend.”

“How many times do I have to remind you that I have no right to be jealous over what Nate does or doesn’t do in his personal life, all things considered?” She smiles. “Plus, I just want him to be happy. And you make him happy, Laney.”

I scoff. “He’s my patient.”

“I know. It’s kind of sexy.”

“Whoareyou?!”

“Think of me as your own personal cupid.”

My jaw hangs open. “It’s wrong.”

“Lots of things are wrong. Arson. Murder. White after Labor Day.”

“Sonia!”

“You’re right, that last one is stupid.”

I facepalm.

“Having feelings isn’t wrong, Laney.”

“Having feelings is definitely a stretch when it comes to what’s happening with Nate.” I’m as definitive as I can be.

Sonia quirks an eyebrow. “Then how would you describe it?”

I go silent. Because there is no other way to describe it.

I do have feelings for Nate. Beyond our therapist and patient relationship, beyond platonic friendship.

If the gap between Nate and me disappeared, I wouldn’t push him away. And that scares me. “Every time I let myself go there, I remember Mason.”

Sonia lets out a whistle. “Been there.”

“You have?”

“Well, comes with the territory when you start having feelings for your ex’s dad…”
