“Touché.” I swipe my carrot back out of the hummus and bite through it.

Sonia claps her hands together and then rests them on the counter. “Look. You two have spent nearly every day together for the past, what, five or six months?”

Quite nearly.

“Plus, you knew each other before that. So, it was easy for things to become familiar. It doesn’t surprise me that tension developed out of that.”

My eyes flutter shut.

It doesn’t surprise me either. I just wish I was stronger.

“As far as Mason goes…you ended things with him, right?”

A knot forms in my throat I know I can’t swallow. “Yeah. I did.”

“For a reason, I’m sure.”

Itwasfor a reason. But now, three years later, I know it wasn’t a good one. “Yes, but seeing him again…”

Sonia smiles with kind sympathy. “Brings things back.”

“It does. So many things.”

“I know it’s not easy since they’re friends. And honestly, I know there’s a lot of tension between the two of them over all this.”

My eyes bug out. “Over me?”

“Don’t act like you don’t know you’re hot shit around here, Laney.”

“I…didn’t know.” Okay, the hand on my knee and toe tapping mine under the table maybe gave me a tiny bit of an idea.

“You want my advice? Go with the flow.”

“But what if that flow is–”

“If it leads you right into Nate’sarms, go for it. He’s a great guy. Seriously. We didn’t work out for…lots of reasons, but–”

I shake my head. “I don’t think I can handle it.”

We are both quiet for a moment.

Sonia turns her empty protein shake on its side and spins the bottle on the counter. “If you don’t want anything to happen, then it won’t. He’s a gentleman.”

I watch the bottle spinning. Hypnotic. “I don’t know if I can trust myself.”

Sonia grabs the bottle, breaking the spell. “I think the issue is your head doesn’t like what your heart wants.”

I grab another carrot. Dip it into the hummus. Bite it.Snap. “I’m annoyed.”

“Why?”

“Because I think you’re right.”

Sonia beams.
