“Then what would you call it, Lanes?” I lean my elbows on my knees.

She pinches her lips together, her eyes rolling up. “Oh, I don’t know.”

“Come on, Laney…” Mason eggs on.

Laney huffs. “I’m thinking, I’m thinking…”

Mason and I remain quiet, the crackling fire the onlysound in the air.

The darkness of the night surrounds us, my stomach dropping more by the second.

Laney is going to offer the word “mistake” or “upsetting,” and I need to be ready for the blow.

Laney drops her head, a curtain of hair falling over her eyes. As she tucks it behind her ear, she smiles. “I kind of liked it.”

I forget how to breathe.

Mason’s jaw is hanging open, smiling in shock.

“Stop staring at me like that. You’re making me nervous.” Laney rubs the back of her neck.

“Sorry, sorry.” I clear my throat. “Guess you have Mason to thank for that one.”

“Thanks, buddy,” he utters.

I smile. “It’s a compliment!”

“You guys, please, let’s just…oh, my god.” Laney hides her face in her hand, and, though she’s grinning, I can tell she’s embarrassed.

I look at Mason, quirking my eyebrow. What do we do?

Mason shakes his head.

Part of me wants to apologize, the other part of me doesn’t feel a need to.

Maybe it’s too much too fast.

I swallow. I can’t believe I’m going to do this.

Pushing myself to my feet, I sigh. “I think I’m going to turn in early. Been a long day.”

“Really?” Mason furrows his brow.

“Yeah, you know, taking it easy as per…Laney Briggs’ instruction.” I shrug. “Besides, did a lot of physical activity today, so–”

Laney gasps. “Seriously, Nate, you don’t have to keep reminding–”

I lift my chin and smirk. “I thought you said you kind of liked it?”

She blinks her blue eyes. So innocent-seeming. Yet, we all know what she’s capable of.

I direct my next question at Mason. “You okay out here?”

We hold an entire conversation in one look.

I’m notpermittinghim to have Laney. That’s not what this is about. I’m only keeping the door open.

We all know how today felt. Would be a shame for it to be a one-time thing.
