Which means I need to be brave. Take the chance and walk away.

Mason gives me a steady nod. “I’m good if you’re good, man.”

I don’t respond with words. Instead, I go over to Laney and touch her chin.

She does not draw away.

I lean down and press a soft kiss to her lips, feeling Mason’s eyes taking us in.

This kiss is an offering. A reminder. Of how I’ve had her. How I still want more of her.

Of how he can have this moment with her.

“Goodnight, Lanes.”

Laney’s chest heaves. Poor girl looks out of sorts, like her mind is whirling with all sorts of ideas no one ever told us was possible.

Up here in the middle of nowhere, though, after this morning, everything feels possible.

I can’t tell them what to believe or what to think. But I can give them the opportunity to figure it out.

With a final look at Mason with a soft smile, I retreat intothe house.

I find it almost impossible to fall asleep, thoughts of Laney and Mason intertwining in my head.

And when I finally do find slumber, I am steeped in dreams about a reality where Laney doesn’t have to choose. And I don’t care.

LANEY

I still feelNate’s kiss on my lips long after he’s disappeared inside.

Mason and I are silent for a long time before I speak. “Why did you watch?”

It comes out without me thinking if it’s a bad question.

Mason licks his lower lip and looks away. “Yeah, I’m sorry about that.”

“Don’t be sorry.” I mean it. Because I liked it. And I’m so confused as to why.

I never considered the idea of being watched by someone while fucking someone else.

And I never considered the possibility of wanting multiple guys and not being able to identify which one I like more.

“Why, Mason?”

Mason shakes his head, his brow brunching together. And then he laughs. “Laney, if I could tell you why, I would. But I can’t. I just…wanted to.”

Desire flares in my belly. “You wanted to.”

“Yeah, I liked it too.” He clears his throat and folds his hand between his knees.

It’s like he’s trying to be logical about this situation. A businesslike expression.

The trick being that this situation is not logical whatsoever. “I had never considered it before. I don’t think I considered it at the time, I just did it.”

“You’re braver than me.”
