I lower my lips to the crown of her head, let them drift back and forth through her hair, taking in her scent. I give her one last kiss, then disentangle from her embrace.

She remains asleep, thankfully, though her arms extend toward my side of the bed like there’s a ghost version of me in my spot.

As quietly as I can, I throw on some clothes and head downstairs.

The house is bathed in silence.

I’m the only one awake.

I was hoping Nate might be as turned around as I am, and we could talk, clarify what is going on between the three of us.

What kind of relationship is this? Betweenthreepeople? Aren’t those usually called love triangles? Except that involves some amount of jealousy, and my jealousy has almost melted away.

I need to talk to someone. Someone who knows me. Someone who won’t judge me.

I mull over the options as I make a pot of coffee.

In normal circumstances, I would talk to Nate. But Nate is asleep, and this is in partaboutNate.

In serious moments, I might talk to my dad, although this isn’t a situation my dad would even attempt to understand.

I could try Jack, although he’s probably busy with work, not to mention Nate being his brother, he’d be grossed out to hear about his brother’s romantic life.

So, that leaves one option. Seth.

With my cup of coffee, I go outside and down the dock where I seem to get the best phone service. Once I’ve taken a comfortable seat, I give Seth a call.

He picks up after a few rings. “What the fuck, man?”

“Hello to you too.” I chuckle.

“It’s so fucking early, dude.”

I glance up at the sun that’s still trying to peek up over the horizon. “Yeah, sorry about that. Been waking with the sun these days.”

“It better be an emergency…”

I scratch the back of my head and squint across the glimmering water. “Yeah, something like that.”

“If it’s life or death, call nine-one-one.”

“No, it’s nothing like that. It’s…it’s Laney.”

Seth pauses. “I told you not to go up there, man. You’re just making everything more complicated.”

“It’s complicated, alright…”

“Oh god.”

“What?”

Seth sighs. There are some ruffling sounds on his side of the line. “You slept with her, didn’t you?”

“Don’t say that like it’s a bad thing, Seth.”

“It’s not agreatthing, seeing as Nate was so into her, and you two are doing this wholeTwilightthing over her.”

I snort. “Why do you know that reference?”
