I rub my face with my hand. “Dude, I don’t know what’s going on with me. I don’t know what’s going on in my head.”
“So, let me get this straight…you want to be with Laney.”
“Yes, of course I do. You know that.”
“And you don’t care if Nate is with Laney too?”
I shake my head. “It’s not ‘not caring’. It’s…bigger than that.”
If I could explain to Seth exactly how my heart flames for Laney Briggs, then maybe he could understand. He’s never known a love like that, though.
I’m not sure many people have. But I love her so much that I want her to be ensconced in love at all times. Trapped in the thick of it.
And though I can give her every part of me, the first time we did that, I wasn’t enough.
She couldn’t feel it all the time.
What if both Nate and I love her from both directions at all times? Is that even possible?
“Are you saying you want to be in a throuple?”
“What the fuck, Seth!”
“I’m just asking.”
“That word is so…immature.”
My friend scoffs. “Um, okay. You want to be poly with Laney and Nate.”
“I’m not in love with Nate.” Not in a romantic way. “I love him as a friend, of course, but–”
“Oh my god, you’re so pedantic.” Seth huffs. “You both want Laney. And you’re okay with Nate wanting Laney so long as you have Laney too. In fact, you like that she has an outlet separate from you. Right?”
“Yeah, definitely.”
“And you trust Nate.”
“Of course, I do.”
Seth clicks his tongue. “Well, that sounds like polyamory to me.”
“That’snota thing.”
“You’re damn right it’s a thing. Have you been on adating app in the past five years? It seems like half of couples these days are polyamorous.”
I chew on my lower lip.
That couldn’t be me, could it? “But I don’t like the idea of her with other people. Just Nate.”
“Okay, so it’s a closed polyamorous trio. Athrouple ifyou will.”
I wince at the term again.
“Laney has two partners. If you can live with that, then hey, go for it.”
“How do you know so much about this?”
“You know, I’ve been around the block. I dated a girl who was married for a bit. Open relationship, of course. They dated separately.”
