“You okay, Lanes?”

“Hm? Oh, yeah.” She doesn’t even glance at me before heading upstairs to her room.

I frown.

Mason pops his head in from the kitchen, glances up the stairs, then back at me. “She’s acting weird, right?” he whispers.

I put my finger over my mouth and wave him over.

Mason hurries and perches on the edge of the coffee table.

“I don’t want her to hear us talking about her.”

Above us, the floorboards creak in her room.

We both look up.

I imagine her walking around, shoulders hunched, a solemnity in her pretty blue eyes.

“Was she weird during your session?” Mason crosses his arms over his chest.

“A little. Kinda felt like old Laney…like six-months-ago Laney.”

Mason’s lips twist to the side. “Yeah, I felt that when we woke up together too.”

I’m not envious at Mason’s mention of Laney being in his bed. I’m worried. Worried for our girl.

What the hell? “Our girl”?

I shake away my thoughts. The reality is what it is.

If I spend any more time dissecting the wrongness or rightness, I’ll give myself an aneurysm. “Was she upset?”

“Not outwardly. Just…off. I think she’s probably just sad, maybe?” My friend shrugs, glances back up the stairs. “I don’t know, maybe that’s wishful thinking.”

“Don’t be mean to yourself. You would know better than me, but it seems to me Laney’s been really happy the past week, yeah?”

Mason’s lips form a twisty smile. “I think you can tell too by this point. You’ve spent the past half a year with her every day.”

“Yeah, but you were in a relationship with her. I don’t want you to think I’m taking that away from you.”

He shakes his head. “I don’t.”

We exchange smiles. I wish I could read his mind becauseto methis feels like some unspoken agreement. That what we have, we like.

“To be honest with you, Nate, I’m disappointed too.” Mason’s green eyes fall to his knees. “This is the happiest I’ve been in a long time.”

I smile. “Really?”

“Yeah, really.”

“Me too.”

Mason looks back to me in a flash, surprise capturing his expression. “Seriously?”

I laugh. “I just asked you that!”

“Yeah, but…” Mason gnashes on his lower lip for a moment, then meets my gaze with hardened determination dancing in his irises. “It makes me happy to know that, man. Because this situation isn’t…normal.”
