“No, you could say that again.”

“I mean, I guess peopledoit, I just don’t know any people who do this kind of thing.”

I pause. “Shit, I guessweare the people we know who do this kind of thing.”

“Yeah, you’re right about that.”

“Although, I don’t know what kind ofthingthis is.”

Mason takes a breath and opens his mouth to say something but seems to change his mind. He sighs. “Yeah, it’s complicated.”

The sound of Laney’s door opening reaches us from upstairs.

We both look up, sealing our lips together and holding our breath as Laney walks down the stairs and disappears into the kitchen.

She lets out a heavy, lilting sigh.

Poor thing. I want to wrap her up in my arms and take away whatever burden is heavy on her.

And maybe I can.

“You’ve got a look in your eye,” Mason says.

I raise an eyebrow.

“The same kind of look when you decided you were moving to California.”

A grin spreads across my face.

“A devious sort of look. I’m not sure I like it.”

I lean my head back to peek into the kitchen and call out, “Laney!”

“Yeah?” she calls back without making an appearance.

“You’re acting weird.”

Mason gawps at me, slaps me on the knee. “What the fuck, man?”

Laney steps into the doorway of the kitchen, frowning. “I’m not acting weird.” Her eyes flick between Mason and me. “Were you two talking about me?”

Mason lifts his hands and stands up. “He said it, not me.”

“Yes, we were.” I smile.

Laney’s expression is more confused than angry.

Mason on the other hand starts to pace, ruffling his hands through his hair.

Relax, man, I got this.

Laney looks at us, then stares out a window. “I’m just trying to get things in order to head back home tomorrow”

“Well, don’t.” I get to my feet.

Mason stops pacing and just gawps at me.

Laney furrows her brow. “Are you saying Ishouldn’tpack?”
