“He just smart mouthed me. He doesn’t get it, Damon.”

“We just took him on! And, you have to admit, he made a damn good point!”

I opened my mouth to argue, but Damon was right. Joel was right. I felt as if I was the one new to everything, and in a way, I was. It had been Damon and me for a long time, and nights of different men in our ropes. To have one that was lasting was a learning experience for all of us. “Fine. But…the thought of him, hitting on guys at the rodeos and shit, well, I’m not sure I like it.”

“Why not? You saw those guys, Burke. There are some hot fucking men! If he were to bring one home every now and then…well, would we turn them away and get mad at him?”

“No, of course not. And, sure, it would be…really fucking hot, but what if he hits on the wrong guy?”

“From what all I’ve seen, the boy has a good eye for people. I think he can take care of himself.”

I couldn’t help being worried about him. He was so brazen that he could hit on the wrong person and be beat half to death in a parking lot or worse. “Jaded, Damon. Seen too much hate, I guess.”

“Not here. So far, we’re good. And men will be coming here a lot now, men we can play with, and Joel can too, so maybe we just have to keep him good and sore.”

“True,” I said, laughing as Damon brought me close and kissed me tenderly. “We don’t even know all the rules.”

“Then we’d better get started on them, huh?”

“Yes. You and I will go over what we want, compare to his, and come up with a set of rules. I need it soon. I don’t want him to think we’re as bad at this as I feel we are right now.”

“Always the worrier.”

“Can’t help it.”

Damon kissed me again, but this time, we were interrupted by Joel. He’d come over from the stable and snarked again. “Y’all need some privacy?”

I growled against Damon’s lips and he told me, “Go inside and start our list. I’m going to have a talk with Joel.”

“You better or I’m going to run over him like one of his precious fucking bulls.”

I went back to the barn and looked over some things with Roland. The place was coming along so nicely that I mostly forgot about Joel and his sass. “This is proceeding great, Burke.”

“Your contractors.”

“I knew they were great, but this is above and beyond. How’s the guesthouse?”

“He found the plumbing issue, found the problem with that couple electrical outlets in the kitchen. They’re already updating it and if they have the time, I’d love to get them on the main house. That kitchen tile in there, it’s making me a little nuts.”

“Oh, right, that putrid pink.”

“That’s exactly the shade of pink it is, yes.”

“I’m sure they could do it. I am turning them onto another job in August, so they’re free until then unless they have another lined up that I don’t know about. He stays as free as he can for my jobs though.”

I liked hearing that. “Well, reinforcing the studs in the walls in here was genius. I would have given them five stars for just that alone.”

“You’re hanging grown men on the walls and shit, Burke,” he said in a hushed voice, blushing as he likely remembered the day in the woods.

“Yes, we sure are. You’ll be one of them.”

“Damn, stop! I gotta go soon!”

When Roland left and I went into the house, Damon called me over to the table. Our two tablets were there, and Joel couldn’t meet my eyes. “What’s going on?”

“Joel was just making his list, and I was making ours. Would you add anything to it?”

I sat by Damon and grunted, “No fucking backtalk.”
