“If one more person tells me they are going to have me checked out by some specialist for minor smoke inhalation, I am throwing you all out of this room.” I glared at my family, who occupied nearly all the space in my hospital room.

What was the point of being admitted for observation to recover from a traumatic event if no one allowed me to fucking recover?

“Your color is off. I’m calling in Doctor Patterson,” Lucian stated.

Before I could respond, Leo said, “She’s the best in the field. Call her in.”

Oh, for the love of God.

“I am fine. I only need rest. How many times do I need to emphasize this?”

“I know what the fire department said. You were in there double what they said was safe. It’s better to err on the side of caution.” Lucian glared at me.

“I had more tests than the average person gets. They are all clear. Why are we having this conversation again?”

“No, have it again. These discussions are amusing.” Carter laughed. “It’s like those old-school record players skipping, and the song repeats. Don’t you agree?”

He leaned over to nod at Tiernan, who stood near him with his wife Bianca.

“This is more entertainment than I expected when I heard about the fire.”

Lucian shifted his attention to him. “Shouldn’t the two of you be on a different continent?”

I seriously needed some space.

It felt like a Morelli convention, but instead of everyone gathering for a wedding, it was my possible imminent demise.

Carter, June, and Theo stood off on one side of the room with Tiernan and Bianca. They continued to make jokes and snicker.

My brothers were grown, married men acting like teenagers.

I loved them all, but why had they dropped everything to come here? They were so eager to get out of town after Eva’s wedding. Shouldn’t they be vacationing, saving the world, or buying art? Or on another continent, like Lucian asked?

Then Leo added his two cents, “Sophia, give in, and we will leave you alone. What harm will it do to see someone we bring in? Once Dr. Patterson checks you out, we promise to keep everyone away from you. We donate enough to her program that she’ll jump at the chance to come see you.”

Leo and Lucian were about to get a fist to the nose if they kept up with the lord of the hospital shit.

“Because I don’t need you to bring in anyone. I’m fine. According to the doctor, I didn’t need to stay the night. I’m only here because of you and busybody over there.”

“That’s why you need a second opinion. These docs can’t know everything,” Leo defended.

“Get out. Right now. Elaine, Haley. I promise I will kill them.”

The two overbearing butthead’s saving graces were their wives. Elaine and Haley seemed to know exactly when I was ready to jump out of bed and throat punch one of them and found a convenient way to pull them out of the room for a private conversation.

It’s too bad they missed the mark this time.

“We are not leaving until we have a press release written.” Dad folded his arms across his chest and glowered at everyone who looked in his direction.

“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Dad,” Lucian exclaimed. “Sophia nearly dies, and that’s your priority. We need to focus on her health right now.”

“He’s right. What’s more important, your daughter or a press release?” Leo glared at Dad.

“The two of you are a disgrace to the Morelli family name. I’m protecting the family legacy since none of you are bothered enough to do it.”

Of course, Dad only cared about his image. He’d rather rant and rave about Lucian’s sex club and how to redeem the family in the court of public opinion.
