“I have a headache. Can all of you leave?” I shot a pleading look in Mom’s direction, who only gave me her calm Sarah Morelli face, not the no makeup, unguarded face from our breakfast.

But to my surprise, she set a hand on Dad’s forearm and said, “It is better to work on the statement in private so no one can overhear the planning. Hospital staff aren’t known for their discretion.”

Dad scowled and opened his mouth as if to argue, then nodded. “At least you have half a brain. Unlike any of the ungrateful lot in this room. Where’s Eva?”

“I told her to go home to her husband and newborn child while you lectured Lucian about his club. She listens to me because she knows I’m a grown-up.” I crossed my arms, so done with everyone.

“Then where are the other two?” Dad posed the question as if he’d forgotten his other daughters’ names, which I knew he hadn’t.

He hadn’t even realized three of his daughters left the room being too focused on his tirade.

“You mean Daphne and Lizzy?” asked Emerson, Daphne’s husband. “They are running an errand for Sophia.”

He leaned against a wall, looking inconspicuous and distant. And since that was his nature, everyone just accepted it. The last thing the Morellis could do was cast stones. Though given the chance, Dad loved to toss them at everyone to deflect blame for issues so no one would look at him.

Such was the Bryant Morelli way.

“What type of errand?” Lucian demanded, breaking into my musings.

Everyone, except Emerson turned their attention to me, awaiting an answer.

“None of your business.”

“Come on, Sarah. I’m going home. I know when I’m not wanted.” Dad didn’t acknowledge me, and I shouldn’t have expected otherwise.

Mom approached and kissed my forehead. “Get some rest.”

I nodded.

Not two minutes after the parents left, Lizzy and Daphne strode into the room, heading straight for me with a note. However, Leo snatched it from my finger before I could take it.

“What is wrong with you? That was for me. I’m calling security.” I pushed my covers down and readied to jump from the bed.

Lizzy pushed me down and crawled in next to me. “Stay.”

“Why aren’t they on your case? You were in the club with me?”

“Because I stayed outside once the explosions started, and you went inside to save your man.”

I pursed my lips. “Oh.”

Leo read the note and sighed.

“What does it say? Give it to me.” Lucian snatched the paper from Leo’s fingers and read. “At least one of you has common sense.”

“Meaning?.”

“Pierce said you are forbidden to see him until you are one hundred percent healed.”

Forbidden. Okay, whatever. “Is that all it says?”

“No, but I’m not reading that out loud with any of these people in the room.”

“Well, get them to leave. Oh, and you can go with them and leave the note behind.”

“Just let us have someone check you over. What is the big deal?” There was a plea in his eyes he had never shown me before.

Then it hit me. Lucian was really worried and blamed himself for the fire.
