Tanner held his hands up. “Easy. I’ll be in.” He turned as Jax came up beside him. “Oh, sorry, man.”

“Your boss is right. You almost crashed into me.”

“Yeah, sorry. I wasn’t paying enough attention. Wanted to catch that righteous curl. You know?”

Jax huffed. “I know.”

I clapped Tanner on the shoulder. “Be careful. I’m going to be calling a team meeting. You better be there.” I pointed at Tanner’s face, frustrated at the younger man.

“I will. Promise. I got this, boss.”

“Get out of here.”

Tanner grabbed his board and paddled back out.

“So, you’re the boss?” Jax asked. His wet hair hung half in his face, but I wanted to see his eyes.

“I’m the lead lifeguard, so yeah, his boss.”

Jax gave a curt nod and turned back to face the water.

“Wait, Jax.”

Jax stopped and looked over his shoulder.

“You want to grab a drink tonight? Or something?” I wanted to know more about this man and if he could really manipulate the water as it appeared. It couldn’t be, though. And more realistically, if he wanted to date.

Jax smirked, sexy but snarky. “Okay. What the hell? I’ll meet you at your office after work. When do you get off?”

I set a time with Jax that was probably a lot earlier than I should have, based on the reports I knew needed to be filed, but like Jax said, what the hell?

I had a date.

Well, maybe a date. Before I could ask Jax to confirm the category of our evening, he left, paddling back out into the water.

With a sigh, I went back to work. I had shit to do. When my relief arrived, I went back into the office and set up a team meeting for the next day. I posted a sign that said Attend -- or you’re fired. Then, I had Izzy call down the roster. She was always good for a bit of help.

I needed to get this crew back on schedule because maybe I would have someone to date and hang out with outside of work rather than dedicate every waking hour to it. I was excited about seeing Jax again—the star of my wildest and wettest dreams. There was something more to this man, and I wanted to dig into his deepest secrets.

Chapter three

Neil Gets Lucky

ItookJaxtoSea-combers, a restaurant with a quiet bar in the back, so we could order dinner or snacks and drinks. The serene atmosphere settled over us as we took a seat in the back corner. Jax’s gaze bounced around the room. Giant ropes, netting, large pieces of driftwood, and other kitschy nautical-themed items hung from the ceiling and adorned the walls—all very touristy.

“This somewhere you hang out regularly?” Jax asked with one eyebrow raised.

I had to chuckle. “No, not really. I used to, but truth is, I haven’t done muchhanging outlately. Too busy with work.”

Jax simply nodded and looked at the menu. “Is the food good, though?”

“Oh, yes. That’s the best part.”

“Good, I’m starving.”

“Me, too.” I gave what I hoped was a sexy look and licked my lips.

Jax smiled shyly and focused on the menu.
