I was more interested in Jax than what to order, and I hoped he felt the same. “So, what’s your full name? Is Jax short for Jackson?”

“Uh, no. Actually, it’s short for Ajax.”

“What? Like the cleaner?”

“No. Like from Greek mythology. He was one of the heroes of the Trojan War.”

“Oh, I get it. Ajax. Right. So does that have anything to do with what you can do with water?”Whoa. I couldn’t believe I just blurted that out.

“What do you mean?” He put the menu down, and I hoped that was a good sign. At least I managed to capture Jax’s attention. For a moment.

“I saw what you did. That was you, right?” I waved my hand in the air over my head. “That hocus pocus. Making the water glow and the waves…uh, move?”

Jax bit into his plump bottom lip, looking worried—and sexy.

“I’m not crazy, right?” I asked.

“No, you’re not crazy, Neil. But I don’t want to talk about it. Seriously, I’d rather talk about you.”

“Me?” I leaned back in my chair. I had not expected that. At all. Surely, my life was boring compared to Jax’s. Named for a Greek hero and looking every bit the part with his broad shoulders and his hair not wet for once—it practically glowed golden blond as it bounced around his face and shoulders when he moved. Oh, and being able to control the ocean. Yeah, he was a hell of a lot more interesting than I could ever be. But his tone had made it clear that subject was off the table, and I would respect that…for now.

“Come on. What’s your life like? Tell me.” Jax’s eyes warmed up from a cold Arctic to a softer, deep blue sky. The sincerity in them distracted me from his questions.

But I had to answer to break the silence. “Okay, then. Well…you know I’m the head lifeguard at Palm Oasis. And employees are douches.” I chuckled nervously. “Not really, they’re just young. That’s the problem with managing lifeguards here. I’d love to have a more mature staff.”

“You’re pretty young yourself. Young to be in a management role.”

“Not really. I mean—”

The server finally showed up. “Can I get you some drinks? Would you like to order appetizers?”

I ordered a vodka and cranberry, picking a good name brand, then glanced up at Jax. He puckered his lips, making me want to taste them. He ordered whiskey flavored with honey.

The waiter turned to leave, but I stopped him. “Wait, can we have a pound of peel 'n eat shrimp?” I turned to Jax. “You like shrimp?”

“Yes, sounds good.”

I nodded to the server, then looked back to Jax. “What were we talking about?”

“I don’t remember.”

“New subject then. What brings you to Cambria Bay?” I couldn’t recall seeing Jax around, and I’d surely remember that sight, so I assumed Jax was new.

“Checking it out. What about you?”

“Lived here most of my life. All I can remember, anyway. My parents settled here when I was a baby. They worked the resorts.”

“So, it’s a family business?”

I shifted in my seat. “It was at one time. Not now. Dad died a few years ago.”

“Sorry to hear that.”

“Yeah, heart attack. He went fast. After that, mom moved up north with her sister, and my older brother went with her. He finished college up there.”

“So only you and your brother?”

“Sister, too. She married a military man last year, and I haven’t seen her since.”
