She’s going to force my hand.

Son. Of. A. Bitch.

“Ares...” She holds the knot in her towel tightly and straddles my lap. “What are you talking about?”

My hands move to her back, holding her in place. “Why’d you lie to your sister?”

“I told you, I didn’t lie,” she argues in a sugary sweet voice.

The swells of her breasts rise and fall with each deep breath, and I swear to fucking God, the last thing I want to do is fight with her. “Gracie...”

“What? I didn’t lie.”

“I saw the pills on your counter.”

Her face pales. “You’re not— I didn’t mean?—”

“You told me you were fine, good twin. Told your sister the same thing.”

She bites down on her bottom lip and looks away, like she’s searching for the answer. “It’s not like that.”

“Not like what, Grace?” I wait for an answer, but she refuses to look at me. “If you’re fine, why did you pop an Oxy?”

Fuck. I know I’m being a dick.

But. She. Lied.

You don’t lie if you’ve got everything under control.

“I was going to take this week. I was supposed to rest... I’ll stay off it today and be fine tomorrow.” She finally gives me her eyes, and pain is swirling behind her pretty blues.

“How long has it been since you saw the doctor?” I push.

“What?” Grace plays dumb. Something she definitely isn’t, so my girl is avoiding like a champ.

“You have a prescription in your bathroom. You must have seen a doctor. When did you see them?” I move toward the bathroom, and she blocks me.

“Excuse me?”

Oh, yeah. Now that pain is replaced by fire.

She’s pissed. Good. Let her be mad.

“When did you see the damn doctor, Grace? What did they say was wrong?” I bend my knees and cradle her face in my hands. “And don’t tell me it’s nothing. You wouldn’t need Oxy if it was nothing.”

She tries to shove me away, but I don’t let go. “Who the hell do you think you are, Ares Wilder?”

“I’m the man who’s in love with you, Grace.”

She gasps at my admission, then closes her mouth and shakes her head. “You’re not. You like the idea of me. We’ve spent three days together. You don’t even know me.”

“If you believe that, you’re lying to your sister and yourself.”

I reach into my bag and pull out the gift-wrapped box and toss it to her.

“What’s this?” she asks as she catches the robin’s-egg blue box with the giant white bow.

“Your birthday present. I need to get out of here.”
