There’s a reason that predators and prey grow in tandem with each other.

The prey’s adaptations are to hide them from the predator, and the predators are to better catch their prey. It requires an understanding of one’s enemy in order to stay safe.

“Whoever it is, they had no idea that Dino was connected,” Caterina whispers.

I nod. This makes the most sense.

“And he thought that he could just fix it by offering up information about Luna, and Marco. He knew you’d have resources to take care of them, so he did it, and now we’ve lost Marco.”

I nod again.

“Shit,” Caterina mutters.

My eyes snap to her. She never curses, so the phrase sounds odd coming from her lips.

She glances at me. “I think I want to see him now.”

“You do?”

“I get what you’re saying about people growing and changing. But honestly, Elio, it’s still Dino in there. My brother, the terrible liar, is still sitting in that room. If anyone can figure out what’s going on, it’s me.”

I smile. “Sal thought that as well.”

“Sal is a spy and a rule-follower. He’s never had to be a little sister with three older brothers,” she sniffs.

The corners of my lips curl. “And how does that change your situation?”

“I know every button to push on every single one of my brothers that will send them into an inconsolable rage,” she chirps.

I give her a small smile then. “And this will help us?”

She nods and puts a hand on the door. “Yep. Come with me. You’ll see.”

Caterina pushes the door open, and I follow, shaking my head.

Yes. I suppose I will see.

I know that I crumple under Caterina’s scrutiny.

I look forward to seeing someone else enduring her remarkable, yet pointed, charms as well.

CATERINA

Dino looks terrible.

The part of me that’s his sister feels awful for him in that moment, because really, he looks like crap. His face is brutally bruised, his lip looks like Jell-O, and he can only really see out of one eye.

I look back at Elio, who puts his hands up and shakes his head. “He came in like this, amore mio. I had nothing to do with his condition.”

Dino barks out a harsh laugh, that sounds more along the lines of a wheeze than anything. “Sounds like a lot has changed in the weeks since I last saw you, Kitty-Cat.”

I hate that nickname. “It’s Caterina,” I snap.

“Wow sis, did you grow claws too?”

“Maybe. Why the hell did you sell out Luna, you jackass?”
