Lately, though, he’s been around a little more. His face is still pretty scarred, and he doesn’t say much.

But he’s out of the basement.

I don’t know what type of deal my brother and Elio brokered with him. I know it has something to do with the fact that Marco is still missing, but I’m not about to ask about it right now.

They’ll tell me.

I move my hand protectively over my belly.

I have plenty to worry about right now.

Behind me, there’s a loud noise as the door to the house slams.

Gia storms out into the yard. In her arms is the ice that she went to go get, but from her face is nothing but cold.

It promises murder.

She snaps at me. “Your brother is a pain in my ass.”

I look curiously at her. “How so?” I don’t ask which one, and I’m not quite sure that I’m updated on what Gia knows about Sal’s latest assignment.

“He’s not here. He won’t come out of his room. And he won’t answer any of my phone calls.”

“Oh dear,” I whisper.

I have a bad feeling that Gia found something out that she didn’t necessarily need to know yet.

I can’t remember if Elio or I was supposed to tell her, but this is probably going to be bad. I take her elbow, handing the ice to one of the staff, and pull her closer to the house.

I sense Elio drift behind me.

“When did you last hear from him?” I ask cautiously.

I’m treading water here, and I need Elio’s backup.

We both turn on my husband.

Elio, looking more than a little guilty, puts his hands in his pocket.

Gia’s face transforms. She turns to her brother, a snarl on her lips. “Where did you send him?”

“Gia…”

“Where. Did. You. Send. Him,” she spits.

He holds his hands up. “Europe. He’s en route to Europe.”

“And no one thought to tell me?”

Oh, shoot.

I guess the cat’s out of the bag for this.

Gently, I put my hand on Gia’s shoulder. “Sis. He asked.”

She whirls on me. “You knew too?”

“Of course she did. I do not keep things from Caterina,” Elio rumbles defensively.
