She sighs. “I think it’s time for us to involve family.”

I frown. “Well, you’re already engaged in this work. What else could you…”

“No. Some other family.”

I blink.

She cannot be serious. “Gia. There is no way that you are going to say what I think you’re going to say.”

“Yeah, sadly Elio, I think I am.”

I shut my eyes and pinch the bridge of my nose.

“Okay. Lay it on me.”

“I think we need to ask the DeLucas for help.”

The pit in my stomach is back.

“Gia,” I growl.

“I know, I know, but it’s the best choice.”

I do not agree.

But unfortunately, like many times, Gia is right.

So, I do the thing that I absolutely do not want to do.

I sigh into the phone, knowing my sister can feel how much this hurts me.

“Make the call.”

CATERINA

I kissed Elio.

It’s dark out, and I think the last time I checked the antique clock in the room it was somewhere nearing two in the morning.

Luna’s been asleep for hours, of course, and I’ve done nothing except wander around the room and occasionally stare at her.

I kissed Elio.

And he rejected me.

Even that thought isn’t quite accurate. I didn’t just kiss him. That’s accurate but it’s not the full truth, because it somehow doesn’t quite encapsulate the gravity of what happened.

The kiss was… life-shattering. It was the kind of kiss that lingers in your blood, taking over your mind with its sheer perfection.

We kissed. I kissed him.

I climbed him like a tree. I rubbed myself against him, desperate for a release of some of the tension that’s been plaguing me.

And then he rejected me.

Not for the first time, I grab a pillow to shriek into it. Embarrassment heats my skin.
