“Just something odd this morning. And he called her Tammy.”

“Tammy? Didn’t she threaten to smack Carino if he called her Tammy?” Adam asked, mentioning their HPD liaison.

Del nodded. “Yeah. It was just…there was a vibe between them.”

He had caught it too, but he didn’t want to assume anything. It could be that there would always be that energy between them. “I really don’t think there is anything going on between the two of them.”

Del shrugged. “I don’t really give a damn, but I want to make sure it doesn’t give us any issues, since they didn’t end well, from what all of us understand.”

“Yeah, they seem to still be hands-off.”

He nodded. “I have an interview with Harrington today.”

“Former SEAL?”

“Yeah. I did a phone interview with him, and he’s my pick out of the three possibilities. The other two have issues.”

“And they live on the mainland.”

“Yeah, that’s one of the issues.”

“What about Harrington?”

“Lived here the last three years, and he spent part of his childhood on the island.”

That always made it easier. A lot of people moved to Hawaii thinking every day would be like a vacation. But if you wanted to earn a living, it wasn’t. Same shit happened on Oahu that happened back on the mainland. He didn’t really want to train with someone on their unit, then lose them when island fever hit them.

“Okay. Sounds good.”

“I’ll let you know how it goes.” Del frowned. “Why are you here? You should be at home sleeping.”

He would rather be doing that, but he couldn’t seem to settle.Ever. Not these days. He didn’t know what that said about him. “I have a few things to do, then I will. I didn’t know the FBI had taken over the body from last night, or I would have stayed home. Why are you here?”

“Interview. Then I will go home.”

“Okay. Text if you need me. I’ve got some paperwork.” He bit back a groan as he stood. He was getting too old for all-nighters and then working the next day.

“You really need a life.”

“I live vicariously through you,” Adam said with a laugh. He hoped it didn’t sound as stale as it felt. He shut the door and headed to his office. Adam had learned a long time ago that wishing for things ended in pain, especially when the one woman he wanted was unreachable.

ChapterFour

Marcus opened the door to the hotel room and held it for her. She stepped through the doorway and ignored his look. She wasn’t in the mood for him or his idiotic ideas about their “relationship”. Part of the problem had been him, and the other part had been her. But his issue was commitment, and he always thought the world revolved around him. She worried this would come up during their work, but until now, it hadn’t been an issue. They had never worked a case before this, so there was a good chance it was just this. Or maybe it was just his dumbass way to pass time.

She pushed those thoughts aside and stood in the living area looking out the floor to ceiling windows. Golubev had to have dropped a fortune on the room. It wasn’t high season, but rooms like this were several thousand a night.

The living area was completely pristine, other than the fingerprint powder. The staff wasn’t allowed to come in, but she knew she and Marcus were on borrowed time.

“Something’s off,” Marcus said.

“Yeah.” She walked around the suite trying to get the feel of the hit. She wasn’t that good with murder, just as she had thought before. Strike that. She was good, but she didn’t like dealing with it. Give her surveillance to go through and she was a happy camper. Murders were messy. She liked everything tied up in a neat little bow.

Marcus ducked into the bathroom.

“Anything?” she called out.

He shook his head as he stepped out into the living area again. “Charity probably has all the evidence.”
