“Nothing.”

She nodded. “It’s green.”

“What?”

“The light,” she said just as someone behind them laid on their horn.

He shook his head and hit the gas.

“Maybe I should take care of this and you go home,” she said amused.

“Naw,” he said.

What had changed? That would be the woman sitting next to him right now. Their short, intense affair had scared the crap out of him. He hadn’t admitted it then, but he constantly reminded himself these days. Every time they’d made love, he’d felt those ties growing tighter, and, in the end, he had told himself he didn’t need that kind of distraction.

He had never been so wrong in his life.

He parked his SUV but didn’t move to get out. He had wanted this for months, but most of their interactions were during meetings. Now, he had encouraged her to go out with Autumn, which probably would be at some damned bar filled with tourists looking for a good time.

Fuck.

“Did you say something?” she asked.

Marcus glanced at her and shook his head.

“Okay.”

She said nothing else. After she slipped out of the SUV, he drew in a deep breath and ordered himself under control. When he thought he might be able to act like an adult and not some angsty teen, he followed her out of the SUV. She was on the phone.

“We’re back. What’s up?” she asked. She listened for a long time.

“Why can’t you just tell me?”

Another session of listening stretched out as Tamilya’s expression turned darker. Who the hell was on the other end of the line?

“Fine, we can come down.”

Well, he had his answer. Charity would be the only one who worked downstairs who would have anything for them. Tamilya clicked her phone off and looked at Marcus, but she didn’t truly see him. Her gaze was unfocused. She was nibbling on her lower lip, deep in thought, and there was no doubt something was bothering her.

“Was that Charity?” he asked, wanting to confirm his suspicions.

She nodded. “She said she had some info on the ballistics. She wants us down there right now.”

“Why couldn’t she just tell you over the phone?”

“Right?” she asked as she started walking for the front door to TFH. “That’s the thing that’s bothering me.”

Her frown darkened as they stepped into headquarters and walked to the elevators. He didn’t know what to say to lighten her load. He wasn’t a guy who thought women should always be happy and smiling, but whenever he thought she might be hurting, suffering, he wanted to fix it.

When the elevator doors opened, they stepped off the car. Charity was already calling them.

“She’s loud, and that’s from a woman who has two sisters.”

“Yeah, I know your pain.”

For a second, they shared a smile and he felt a little bit better. He knew this case might cause her undo worries. Virginia Star was in the past, but having it slip into their investigation, even if it led nowhere, couldn’t be easy to deal with.

When they stepped into the forensics lab, he saw TJ.
