“Hey,” he said with a strained smile. “Did you guys get anything good?”

He shook his head. “Only that Golubev was linked to Li.”

“Ah, damn.”

“That was my feeling on the subject,” Tamilya said. “Just what this mess needs is to be tangled up with the Chinese.”

He nodded. “That brings a lot of other implications into the investigation. We are already having issues with China, but this would blow that up.”

“Hopefully he was just killed as some kind of scam,” Marcus said, trying to cheer them all up. Hell, he was trying to cheer himself up.

“Sorry,” Charity said shaking her head. She shared a glance with her husband, then her gaze settled on Tamilya. “But it isn’t going to be that easy.”

“What?” Tamilya asked, and he heard the tension in her voice.

“We linked the bullet in Golubev’s brain.”

Tamilya looked at Marcus, then she looked back to Charity. “Tell us.”

Sympathy and regret stamped Charity’s expression. “The gun was used in the Virginia Star bombing.”

ChapterSix

For a long few moments, Tamilya stood still, unable to think…to even breathe. This can’t be happening.

Spots formed in front her eyes as she tried to deal with the waves of hysteria that threatened to take over. She tried to swallow and found it impossible. She felt a hand at her back. Strong, warm, dependable. Marcus.

“Breathe,” he said softly.

He was the calm in the storm that was threatening to drown her. Corny, but it fit. Because of his support, she drew in a deep breath and released it slowly. Tamilya’s heartbeat slowed down and there were no longer any spots in front of her eyes.

“Thanks,” she murmured.

“Anytime, Tammy,” he said.

She didn’t object to his use of the nickname, couldn’t. His voice rolled over the syllables, and while many times she found it sexy, right now, she found it comforting. The fact that she wanted to curl herself up into his embrace and ignore this was enough to scare her. She had learned long ago that Marcus didn’t like ties beyond the bedroom.

Drawing in a deep breath, she released it slowly and straightened her shoulders.

“So, tell us about this bullet,” she said.

“It’s from the gun used in the killing of the security guard at the mall.”

“Damn,” Marcus said. “Are you sure?”

Charity gave him an irritated look. “Of course I am.”

“This shines a light on what one of our CIs told us today. He was linking Golubev to the bombing.”

“I still disagree with that,” Tamilya said.

“Why?” TJ asked her. He wasn’t challenging her. He was justthatinterested in their theories.

“I looked him up, and he had a thing about bombing or harming civilians. It’s how he lost his parents, so he refused to work with anyone targeting that sector.”

“But, like you said, there were a high number of military families who were there. Most of the casualties were from military personnel and their families,” Marcus said,

She fought back the need to correct him. Not because she thought he was right, but she knew she had a knee jerk reaction to anything related to that particular bombing. Why would he have anything to do with that? He never had any big links to terrorism in the US. He mainly went after Chechen rebels.
