“No problem.”

“I need to make a few calls, including to my folks so they don’t freak. Nothing like being in my thirties and having to check in with my folks,” she said with a self-depreciating grin.

“And we can go over some more of the case if you want,” Marcus said. “I can go out and grab us something to eat, and we can work here.”

They were allowed to take some work home, but certain files were deemed classified, and this was definitely going to be one of them.

“How about Zippy’s?” she asked.

“Sounds good. What do you want?”

“Loco Moco. Thanks.”

She walked to her office without another word, her fingers dancing over her phone.

“Tsk, Tsk,” Autumn said.

“What?” Marcus asked.

“This is not a date. You know that, right?”

“It’s two colleagues who are working late and eating dinner together.” At least, if he kept telling himself that, he might start to believe it. He knew in his heart; he was counting it as a date...sort of. But he would deny it until his dying day.

“Listen, I threw you a bone tonight. I could have easily invited her to stay with me again and offered up my bed. I only sleep about three hours a night.”

“Why doesn’t that surprise me?”

She ignored Marcus’ comment.

“But, if you fuck up this chance, I will hunt you down and make you cry like a baby.” The menace in her voice was unmistakable.

“Is that a fact?”

She shrugged and smiled at him, looking very sure of herself. “I don’t think I will have to because if you fuck up your relationship again, I have a feeling Tamilya will cut off your important bits and pieces.”

Marcus wanted to deny it, but Autumn was probably right. Nope, shewasright. “What do you think I should do this time around?”

“Don’t look at me. Tamilya hasn’t gossiped about you and I didn’t ask. Just don’t fuck it up.”

Unfortunately, that was easier said than done.

ChapterSeven

By the time they made it back to Marcus’ apartment, it was close to midnight. Tamilya stepped off the elevator and waited until Marcus walked forward and led her to his apartment. When she’d moved to Hawaii, she’d steered clear of him at all costs. It was hard because Dillon Securities had a few military and state contracts that had forced them to work together. Other than that, she had avoided knowing where he lived. Truthfully, not knowing was what kept her sane. She might not ever want to get involved with him again, but she knew he was a temptation she’d had problems ignoring while in DC.

He unlocked and opened his apartment door, then moved out of her way. She stepped in and blinked. It was spacious for Honolulu, but not million-dollar spacious.

“Did you rent or buy?”

“Buy. I wanted to do the renovations myself, so I found a place that needed a little work.”

She turned in a circle, taking everything in. It was open concept, each room open and airy. It helped make a normally smallish apartment feel bigger. The kitchen was off to her left, with a massive six burner stove, lots of cabinets and an amazing island with a concrete top that also had four barstools. It wasn’t overly big, but he had used every bit of the space to make it appear that way. There was a small dinette that seated four. The living room had comfy looking gray furniture, and there was a massive TV. All of it led out to the little balcony where he had a couple seats with a small table in between them.

“You must have a fantastic view of the sunrise.”

“One of the main reasons I bought it. I could put the work in to watch the sun rise over Diamond Head.”

She smiled.
