“Could be, but remember, Golubev didn’t like hitting civilians.”

“But he’s dead. That might have been the issue and why they killed him.”

Anxiety started to pound away at her. She didn’t know if she could take another serious case on that scale. Not right now with all the connections. In fact, there was a good chance she would never be able to handle a case like the again. Mentally and emotionally, she took a hit.

“Hey,” he said, settling his hands on her shoulders. She looked up at him. “We will see this through. You’re at TFH and we’re ohana. We don’t fuck each other over to get ahead.”

His gaze was steady and true and his voice confident. This is what she needed. This man with her all the time as a partner. And he was. Since she had started at TFH, Marcus and she had worked on a few things. Not once had he ever questioned her opinion, unless they were openly debating an issue. She knew that she would always be able to trust him. Her stomach muscles eased, and she drew in a deep breath, nodding.

“Thanks. I needed that.”

“I could tell,” he said. “I understand. The Capitol Police weren’t that much different.”

He was right. While a lot of people might not think it, promotions were a cutthroat situation with the Capitol Police. Even the lowest level positions were considered high profile because you had to handle political situations all the time. But it was a small police force with very few supervisory positions to be had.

“And just what is going on in here?” Charity asked smiling. Standing behind her was Autumn, who was eating what looked to be cold pizza.

“Just…nothing,” Marcus said dropping his hands. She immediately felt the loss of connection.

“Marcus was just reminding me that TFH is different than the FBI.”

“Thank God. You can’t trust anyone who works for the federal government,” Autumn said between bites.

“Youworked for the federal government,” Charity said with a laugh.

“Yeah, well, how do you think I know this?” she asked with a smirk.

Tamilya waved away their discussion. “What do you have for us?”

“Say you love me,” Charity demanded.

“Charity,” Marcus said.

“You should say it because it is some damned good stuff,” Autumn said.

“We love you. Now tell me before I have to explain to the Hammer why you’re dead,” Tamilya said.

She preened a little, then said, “Oh, just video tape of the woman who was in the room with Golubev.”

ChapterNine

As Charity played the video of the woman, Tamilya’s stomach tightened again, and her head started to pound.

“We don’t get a good look at her face, but we do get her height, which is about five foot two—” Charity said before Autumn cut her off.

“Tiny,” Autumn said, eating yet another piece of cold pizza.

“Are you eating again?” Tamilya asked.

“I just had a candy bar for breakfast so I’m hungry,” she said right before taking another huge bite. Tamilya chuckled. She didn’t know where Autumn put the calories she ate.

“So, yeah, back to the case,” Charity said with a laugh. “She is tiny, in height but also bone structure. It irritates me that we can’t get a clear view of her face.”

Tamilya watched as the woman and Golubev rode up on the elevator together. It was odd that she was wearing long sleeves, a heavy-looking hat, and sunglasses. In Hawaii, the only thing that fit in the picture was the sunglasses. Most tourists would be sweating within a minute. The humidity took a while to get accustomed to and tourists rarely did. The only thing they could tell was that she was a white woman. And even that was in question. She could be using makeup on her flesh to make her appear paler than she really was.

“It has to be the killer,” Autumn said.

“Yeah, or the one who lured him there,” Tamilya said. “She might not have pulled the trigger, but she could be the person who had been contracted to bring him to the killer.”
