“Update?” Del asked.

“We’re still in a holding pattern. They think Blaisdell was the target, and there is always a chance they have bombs in there already. So, we wait here until the all clear is given.”

Del made a face but he nodded. He was former Special Forces with the Army, so he definitely understood the drill.

“Call your significant others and let them know that you’re going to be stuck working here. Although, most of us have our SOs here. But, let others know. You’ll be stuck here for hours, so best to make plans without you. Just remember, civilians cannot know the particulars. They haven’t released the names of the dead, so that is all under wraps for the time being. Just explain we are here for support and you will update when you can.”

Del moved over to the tent.

Marcus had already called his mother, so he followed Del over.

“Not calling Emma?”

He snorted. “She texted me and told me she’d see me whenever.”

Marcus smiled. Del’s wife had a genius IQ, and she worked with them every now and then.

“Had she heard anything?”

He shook his head. “She heard the report and knew procedure. She’ll probably be in later after we get back. She’s doing a little research.”

Emma worked with game theory and other things way above Marcus’ pay grade.

Autumn stepped up beside him and smiled.

“What?” he asked.

She shook her head. “Nothing. Did you call your mom?”

He nodded, but didn’t ask Autumn about her family. She claimed to have no one left in the world, which made him a little sad for her. Someone shouted out Del’s name and he went to talk to them. It left the two of them together

“She’s calling her parents,” Autumn said.

“What?”

“Tamilya. She’s calling her parents. I figured you would want to look around for her but couldn’t.”

Was he that transparent? Yeah probably.

“Listen, I like you. I think you are good for her,” she said with a smile, but it faded. She leaned in closer and up on her toes. “But, let me warn you: You hurt my friend like you did in DC, and you’ll disappear, and they willnotfind the body parts.”

He blinked. “Did you just threaten me?”

“Are you wearing a wire?”

He shook his head.

“Then, yes, I did. I don’t have many friends, so I am protective of the ones I do have.”

“Okay,” he said, not completely sure if she was joking or not.

Then she smiled. “Good. Glad we understand each other.”

He nodded and Adam caught his attention.

“Be right back,” he said, leaving the strange woman behind. He had to get his head screwed on tight for at least a few more hours. They had too much on their plates to be fucking around.
