“No, I’m fine,”Tamilya said for at least the fifth time.

“Good, but I hate you being there,” her mother said.

“That’s her job,” her father said.

“I know that. I just hate that she’s there.”

Talking to her parents on speaker phone was always fun.

“Listen, I just wanted you to know that this is going to take up a lot of my time. We don’t think it’s connected to my case, but I am TFH POC for it, so I have to be on site.”

“You’re not looking for bombs?” her mother asked. Tamilya rolled her eyes.

“No. I’m not EOD. But we are all on deck to help after they clear the nearby buildings. Listen,” she said, stepping into the tent. Autumn was the only one in there. “I need to go. There’s another meeting. I’ll talk to you both as soon as I can.”

“Okay. Keep us updated,” her mother said.

“Be careful,” her father said.

“I will,” she said. She clicked her phone off before her mother could come up with more questions.

“Tsk, lying to your parents,” Autumn said.

“It was that or my mother wanted to come to Honolulu.”

Autumn’s eyes widened.

“Exactly. She wanted to make something for all of us to eat.”

She let out one of the belly laughs Tamilya loved hearing. “Idolove your mother.”

“Were you talking to Marcus earlier?”

She nodded.

“What about?”

“You.”

“Me?”

“Yeah. I told him if he hurt you again, I’d make him disappear.”

She chuckled, but Autumn stared at her, unsmiling.

“You didn’t.”

She crossed her arms beneath her breasts. “I did. He needed to know.”

Tamilya rolled her eyes. “I told you before to stop doing that.”

“I don’t wanna. Besides, I think that’s not a problem this time around.”

“What are you talking about now?”

“He is so in looooove with you.”

She felt her heart hiccup, then start beating faster. “Stop that.”
