She didn’t acknowledge him as she watched her fellow TFH team members gather around Charity to help her with the goodies she had brought them.

“Hey, everyone. I brought some food,” she said. “Drew’s family came through. They made tons of huli huli chicken and ribs, plus they loaded me down with mac salad, rice, and corn on the cob.”

Drew was Cat’s husband. His family’s restaurants were considered some of the best on Oahu—by locals and tourists. Bags of food seemed to appear whenever they were working a case.

“Hey,” Graeme yelled out. “Charity was ours first. That food is ours.”

Charity laughed. “There is enough for everyone, but it did come from Drew’s family business, so yeah, you guys get first dibs. It’s in the car.”

“Tamilya,” Marcus said again. She had to force herself to look at him. He would never know how raw she was from that one sentence she had uttered. When she looked up at him, she realized that she was wrong. He did know. Understanding shone in his deep brown gaze.

She sighed. “What?”

“You talk like you will never know what that is like.”

“I gave up on that a long time ago,” she said. What the hell was wrong with her? They were on the site of a bombing mishap with more possible bombs to be found. Yet, she was standing there mooning after things that would just not happen for her.

“I think that you need to make sure you know what you’re talking about.”

“What?” she asked, completely confused by his comment. He was walking away from her. “Marcus!”

He still didn’t respond. She hurried to catch up to him. “Explain yourself,” She demanded.

His mouth twitched and she wanted to smack him upside the head, but she resisted—barely.

“I mean that you need to pay attention to what is right in front of you…Tammy.”

Then they were too close to the team to continue the conversation. Dammit.

“Hungry?” he asked.

Tamilya’s stomach rumbled, and she suddenly realized she hadn’t eaten anything but a protein bar in the last three hours.

“I guess that answers my question,” Marcus said with a laugh. “My stomach’s been speaking to me for about an hour.”

“Damn,” TJ said, looking down at his phone.

“What?”

“Del said they opened the site up. That means we’re going to go in. It’s been cleared.”

“That seems pretty fast to me,” Charity said. Tamilya didn’t miss her friend’s worried expression. She knew Charity understood the HPD and the FBI wouldn’t allow them in there if there were any concerns, but everyone who worked with law enforcement knew you didn’t always find every little bomb.

“EOD found three unexploded pipe bombs, so believe me, the place has been thoroughly gone over. We wouldn’t be allowed in there otherwise.”

Both she and Marcus walked back over to their area. The entire team was there, except for Elle, who had gone home. With no deaths, there was no reason for their medical examiner to be hanging around.

“Hey, so they are going to have us go in teams of two. Marcus, you and Cat can team up. Tamilya, you and Graeme. Drew, I want you and Charity to go help over there,” he said pointing over to where they were taking the evidence. “They need you and Charity because they know you will be good at keeping the chain of evidence in line with Federal guidelines. The FBI will start taking over a lot of the investigation. Those of you going inside, go over here to Detective Akaka. He’ll let you know where they want you. Keep your lines open and keep me updated. I’ll send Autumn if she gets back. She’s still helping the EOD guys since she has some experience with it. Go help find the bastards who did this.”

Tamilya walked beside Graeme as they approached the command center. The massive lights they brought out were being turned on now that the sun was starting to set. Akaka had a tablet he was using to keep track of everything.

“TFH, great. Okay, we need you all to start going through the smaller rooms on the first floor. We think we got everyone out of there, but we want to make sure. EOD mainly looked for bombs. Delano told me that Lowe and Floyd would lead the teams.”

They both nodded.

“One team can take east and the other west, then work your way around. We’re all using Station 3, so keep that open. Good luck.”

They all walked to the entrance together, and the telltale taste of metal in her mouth told her that the bomb had been detonated near the entrance.
