“Ugh, I always hate that,” she said.

“If they hadn’t found the bombs, I would have assumed it was a bomb just from that smell,” Marcus said. “And damn, I hate that taste in my mouth.

“We’ll go this way,” Graeme said motioning his head to the right.”

“Let us know if you find anything,” Marcus said.

They walked through the hallways to the Pikake Rooms. The structure was a massive exhibition hall where anything from craft shows to MMA fights were held. The rooms they were going to look through were on the outside of the massive arena area. They were smaller and more private. It would be the perfect staging area for a hit like this.

“What I can’t get is that no one is taking credit for this,” Graeme said. The Scottish transplant had come to the Island and had fallen in love with the people and the location. His wife of just over a year was another transplant from the UK.

“It’s not unheard of, you know. Some of them just like to screw with people.”

“True. Do you have a background in this? Like you’ve worked cases that dealt with a terrorist who likes to bomb people.”

She glanced at him and, even in the emergency lighting, she could see his expression. He wasn’t being malicious, just openly honest. “A few. I’m sure you heard about the Virginia Star bombing.”

He nodded. “Aye, I heard about that, but I was deployed at the time, so I missed most of it.”

She nodded. “I was tracking them.”

“Them? I thought they caught one?”

“I always thought there was someone else. Popov wasn’t a planner or a leader. He was a soldier recruited by someone else. There was no way he did that on his own.”

He nodded as they reached the Pikake room. “Is that how you met Marcus?”

“Not that case in particular. We had been on a task force together about six months earlier. He worked on the Capitol Police when I was with the FBI.”

“Ah.”

He signaled that he would take the right side of the room and she nodded. They both drew their weapons and entered to find the room completely empty. There were a few tables, but if there had been anyone hiding in there, they were long gone. They looked over the things left scattered on the tables. At first, it all appeared to be some kind of crafts, but then she saw the wires and the fine black particles.

“Damn, this is where the perpetrators were hiding before they planted the bombs,” she said. Graeme was already calling it in.

She heard Akaka tell them to step away and the FBI would join them. That meant they would handle the evidence. Her palms itched and she had to force herself to leave the room. This is what she had lived for at one time, but now, she was just a grunt doing a little bit of investigating.

Oh, damn, that sounded bad.

“I’m irritated too,” Graeme said to her.

She glanced at the massive man and smiled. “I didn’t know it showed.”

“Not that easily, but I have a keen eye. Or so my wife tells me.”

She smiled. Another burly man who melted at just talking about his wife.

TJ came in with a bevy of FBI agents. Most of them looked like they might have been in college just last week. And great, now she felt old.

“Thanks, Tamilya. Good find.”

“There’s a lot of material in the room.”

He nodded and turned back to get to work in the room. Agents were carrying in evidence bags and collection tools, and she ground her teeth.

“Let’s get going,” she said.

“Aye. The sooner we go through these rooms, the sooner we can both head home.”
