“But we’ll know,” Charity said. “Coming with?” she asked Emma.

“Yeah, why not? When you call the FBI, tell them to get bent,” she said to Del.

“Hey,” TJ said laughing.

“Can you take care of that?” Del asked TJ. “I need to talk to Tamilya.”

Marcus bristled next to her, but she would not have him fighting her battles.

“Of course.”

She followed him into his office, and he dropped down in his chair. “Close the door and sit down. It’s been one long ass day, and I am too tired to watch you stand.”

She smiled and did as he ordered.

“I know that you didn’t have anything to do with this, but the FBI will ask if I questioned you. Did you?”

“Have anything to do with this bombing or the Virginia Star bombing? No. Other than investigating.”

He sighed. “Good. I know you didn’t, but those assholes…don’t tell Emma I said that. She would rather I never talk to any of them other than TJ, but that, of course, screws with my job.”

“No problem.”

“My other reason for bringing you in here is to talk about how they zeroed in on you.”

“What do you mean?”

“There were hundreds of FBI agents who worked on that case. Only the insiders would know you were thrown to the wolves and that you took it so personally.”

She blinked. “Damn. You’re right. Anyone with access to the case, but that requires top level clearance. Or your wife, apparently.”

“That woman,” he said with equal parts annoyance and admiration.

“You could have asked me out there.”

“I didn’t want comments from the peanut gallery.”

Tamilya found her first real chuckle since getting the text. “True.”

“Plus, I didn’t want to reprimand Marcus for threatening me.”

“What?”

“He’s watching us like he wants to beat me up.”

She turned and found him standing there, his arms crossed over his massive chest, staring at them. She shouldn’t be so damned turned on, but she was. Still, it irritated her all the same.

When she turned back around, she found Del watching her. “Please, don’t worry about that. About him. This is my job and I would rather not be handled with kid gloves.”

Del studied her for a few moments as if trying to figure out what she was saying. “This isn’t about handling you with kid gloves. This is about protecting my people.”

“I don’t need protection. I’m not a green recruit who doesn’t understand how things go.”

His expression softened slightly. “That’s not what I meant. You’re one of us. I have your back. I will never leave you out there on your own, even if you did fuck up. Your fuck ups are mine because I’m your boss. Simple as that.”

She sighed as relief filtered through her. “Thanks. It’s…”

“I get it,” he said when she didn’t continue. Something caught his attention, and she turned around again. She recognized the two men standing there.
